Celebrate the Chinese New Year: This Weekend in Minnetonka

Also this weekend: Minnetonka Schools preschool open house and brunch with pro baseball coach and native Jim Brower.

Chinese New Year

Celebrate the Year of the Horse on Friday, Jan 24. The annual Chinese New Year districtwide event will be hosted at Minnetonka High School from 5:30-8 p.m. 

Activities will be located in the West Gym, Cafeteria and Student Commons.

The free event gives local teachers and community volunteers the opportunity to showcase various Chinese traditions with live entertainment, music, food, crafts and activities for the entire family.

Local Restaurants: Beijing and Mandarin Yang of Minnetonka will be selling authentic Chinese food on site. (Cash only, please.)

The featured entertainment this year is the Eagle Music and the School of Shaolin Kung Fu who will be performing in the Student Union. Minnetonka students will also perform throughout the evening beginning at 6 p.m.

The student-centered event is for students and children of every age. Area authentic Chinese vendors, agencies and educational opportunities will be on display during the evening in the Student Union.

Considering Preschool?

Families with preschool-age children are invited to attend the annual Minnetonka Preschool Open House Saturday, Jan. 25 from 9:30-11:30 am at the Minnetonka Community Education Center.

  • Learn about Preschool options for the 2014-15 school year
  • Meet the teachers and visit classrooms
  • Discover how you can combine preschool with full-time childcare
  • Attend a short presentation, "What to Look for in a Preschool" at 10 & 10:45 am
  • Play in the gym

Fellowship Brunch with Jim Brower

You are invited to brunch on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 9:30-11 a.m. at All Saints Lutheran (15915 Excelsior Blvd.) in Minnetonka. Speaking will be All Saints member, Minnetonka High School alumni, Gopher baseball star and Kansas City Royals pitching coach, Jim Brower. 

Jim will talk about life, goals, family, blessings, faith, achievement and success.  Jim is an very inspiring man who's led an impressive career in professional baseball.

All ages are invited. Bring your dad, sons, grandpa, sports team, friends, mom, daughters or coaches. A free will offering will cover breakfast and collection over expenses will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis society. To help with planning, RSVP to the church office at 952.934.3550.
