20 Minnetonka DECA Students Advance to International Event

The students earned the opportunity to compete at the 2013 International Career Development Conference in California in April, setting a new Minnetonka chapter record.

The following was released by Minnetonka Schools:

Twenty MHS DECA students earned the opportunity to compete at the 2013 International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA, April 24-27.

Seventy-five MHS students qualified for the Minnesota State DECA Competition in Minneapolis, March 3-5. Minnetonka set several chapter records this year at the State Competition. Those records include:

  • Total number of students finishing in the Top 8 in their event: 37 students
  • Total number of students qualifying for the International Competition: 20 students

In order to qualify for the International Competition, students had to finish in the top three of their specific competition. The 20 International Competition qualifiers are listed below along with their event and place at the State Competition.

          – Apparel & Accessories Individual Role Play

          – Principles of Hospitality Individual Role Play

          – Sports & Entertainment Marketing Individual Role Play

          – Entrepreneurship Participating Written Event

          – Financial Literacy Promotion Project

At the state competition, MHS students competed individually or in small teams, in 30 different events. Each event included some version of a business role play or prepared written business plan, ranging in topics such as sports marketing to restaurant management. Each student completed a 100-question marketing test. A combination of scores from the role play and the marketing test determined the winners. Events also include prepared projects such as writing a business plan or developing a new advertising campaign for an existing company or product.
