Minnetonka Takes 2nd At State Swimming

The Skippers improved from 10th place a year ago to runner-up in 2011

The Minnetonka girls swimming and diving team capped off its 2011 season with a second place finish at the Class AA state meet on Saturday in Minneapolis.

The Skippers finished the day with 188 points, second only to conference rival Edina’s 316 in the standings. Minnetonka, which finished 10th a year ago, catapulted itself near the top of the state with a competitive meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

“I’m really proud of how we did coming back today for finals,” coach Dan Berve said. “Almost everybody moved up or held our place we had from yesterday, which we knew was important. It was going to be a battle for the team title.”

The Skippers racked up four second place finishes at the meet, including the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Isabel Wyer also took second in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle on the day.

“I’m really proud of the group this year,” said Berve, who is in his first year. “I’m fortunate to walk in with a talented group of athletes. I’m happy coming from last year where we finished 10th place and disqualified a relay to come back and take second place this year. That’s big steps right there. We’re excited for the future.”
