Tickets are selling quickly to Minnetonka Theatre’s annual holiday musical, presented on the Arts Center on 7 Main Stage Dec. 7-22. This year the theatre is proud to present Annie, the popular show about a favorite 1930’s heroine. Minnetonka Theatre’s all-local cast will dazzle audiences with timeless songs, including “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Greta Grosch (last seen on the Arts Center on 7 stage as “Dolly Levi” in Hello, Dolly! And “The Chaperone” in The Drowsy Chaperone) will star as Miss Hannigan. Hennepin Theatre Trust announced this week that 56 schools will participate in the 2012-13 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program, including Minnetonka High School. Now in its eighth successful year, SpotLight is the Trust’s flagship education initiative which honors, supports, provides training and advocates for Minnesota high school musical theatre students and programs. Student Spotlight: Karl Amundson has a lead in the upcoming fall musical "The Secret Garden."
Karl Amundson lives in Northfield, about an hour south of Minnetonka, but attends Minnetonka High School. “I live with my aunt and uncle in Eden Prairie throughout the week so I can attend Minnetonka,” said Amundson, a senior. “I transferred here so I could have more theater opportunity. The Minnetonka theater program is amazing.” Minnetonka Theatre is preparing for its fall musical, The Secret Garden. Amundson plays Dickon, one of the children who explores the hidden garden. “He's a super fun part, and I can't wait to get onstage,” said Amundson. The award-winning theatre department is excited to celebrate this landmark with the whole community by presenting a classic, family friendly production based on the beloved Victorian tale. On June 16 Minnetonka Theatre will welcome back alumni cast members from past shows to celebrate the theatre’s 10 Year anniversary of producing shows under artistic director R. Kent Knutson. Minnetonka's theatre department does it again. The Minnetonka High School performance of Equus took home a “starred performance” at the state one-act play competition. A starred performance is the highest award given by judges. This was Minnetonka's eighth appearance at state and their eighth “starred” performance. MHS theatre and English teacher John Lynn directed the stellar all-student cast and crew as they presented a 35-minute cut of Equus by Peter Shaffer. In the story, Alan Strang, a 17-year old boy who has blinded six horses, is treated by psychiatrist Martin Dysart. Over the course of treatment Dysart grows puzzled by the boy’s passion and has to face his own doubts about what it means to lead a “normal” life.
