Former Superintendent Gives 'Aida' High Praise

"The wide range of emotion that had to be conveyed by song, in word, and through well-rehearsed body movement and dance stretched their skill development and brought all of us in the audience to appreciative applause again and again."

Since working as editor of Minnetonka Patch, I have had the opportunity to catch a few plays at Minnetonka High School. They have all been excellent, and I brag about the talent of Minnetonka Theatre every chance I get. Apparently, the school's latest musical, Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida" is not one to be missed.  The following letter from former Superintendent of Minnetonka Schools Dr. Don Draayer to Director Kent Knutson was shared with me from the school district.   Dr. Draayer served as principal in elementary, middle and high school settings, followed by assistant superintendent and superintendent positions for 24 years in the Minnetonka School District. He received the honor of National Superintendent of the Year in 1990.   …

VIDEO: Minnetonka Theatre's 'Aida' Opens This Weekend

"Aida," with music by Elton John and Tim Rice, will be performed by Minnetonka students in this spring's musical.

Video by Minnetonka Schools. Aida is the modern retelling of the timeless opera about the forbidden love between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. This passionate and energetic show features an eclectic mix of ballads and pop rock songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, the same powerhouse duo behind The Lion King. The original Broadway production won 4 Tony Awards (including Best Score) and the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2001. VIDEO: MPR Picks Minnetonka's Eric Sargent as 'Showcase Artist'

Classical Minnesota Public Radio staff received more than 90 submissions from across the state. From them, 15 were chosen as Featured Artists and 4 were chosen as Featured Composers.

A Minnetonka High School student was chosen as one of four Showcase Artists in Minnesota Public Radio's Varsity Contest. Classical MPR announced Tuesday that Eric Sargent is one of the Showcase Artists. Young musicians, ages 14-18, from around the state were asked to submit a recording of themselves performing.  Classical MPR staff received more than 90 submissions from across the state. From them, 15 were chosen as Featured Artists and 4 were chosen as Featured Composers. The student musicians received a professional recording session at MPR’s studios and their music was broadcast on Classical MPR in March. (Hear Sargent's recording above.) Minnetonka High School's Eric Sargent Performed Tuesday on MPR

A Minnetonka High School student is one of 15 finalists in Minnesota Public Radio's Varsity Contest.

A Minnetonka High School student is one of 15 finalists in Minnesota Public Radio's Varsity Contest. Eric Sargent was featured on the radio Tuesday afternoon, speaking and then the song he recorded at MPR's studio was played.  Minnesota Varsity, a contest that MPR created for music students in grade 9-12. MPR has judges, but also includes online listener voting, which takes place March 18-24. To participate in Minnesota Varsity, music students from across the state were invited to submit a recording of themselves performing. The recording did not have to be professional quality and could be as simple as a smartphone recording.  For the composition category, student composers were invited to submit an original score for flute, oboe and …

How These Local Dads and Daughters are Bonding Onstage and Backstage

Four dad/daughter duos from the Minnetonka and Excelsior area are among those participating in this weekend's Chanhassan performances of "The Music Man" by Chaska Family Valley Theatre.

Paul Twite and his 11-year-old daughter Rebecca joined the Chaska Valley Family Theatre this year to spend more time together. Ever since, the Minnetonka duo have been working behind the scenes to digitally capture all the components that go into the making of a production—as well as cast promotional shots. “My dad is great, and he even lets me take some of the pictures,” said Rebecca, who is also in the cast. “This has been a tremendous way for me to share my passion and to spend quality time with my daughter,” said Paul. Paul and Rebecca are one of four father/daughter partners participating in the Chaska Family Theatre’s current production of “The Music Man”—which includes a total of 19 families from throughout the surrounding area. …

Minnetonka One-Act Play Heads to State Tourney Stage

MHS won the Minnesota State High School League 6AA One Act Play Sections with a cut of Wit by Margaret Edson.

The cast of Minnetonka High School's one-act play is headed to the state tournament.  MHS won the Minnesota State High School League 6AA One Act Play Sections with a cut of Wit by Margaret Edson. The cast competes Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11:45 a.m. at O'Shaughnessy Auditorium on the St. Catherine University campus (Directions). The price is $10 for a single session or $15 for a daily pass.
