First Time This Season: Minnetonka High School Sports Compete at Home

It's been a little tough to compete in "spring sports," when spring has taken so long to arrive.

With a little help from Mother Nature and the grounds crew, the Minnetonka baseball, girls lacrosse and track teams compete for the first time at home Tuesday, April 16. Photos were taken Tuesday morning. The modified track meet and features “track” events but no “field” events. The day's full schedule can be found here.

Tonka Teams Excel in Spring Sports

Highlights from the spring season in track, baseball, lacrosse, and other sports.

Updated: 3:08pm The Boys Track Head Coach, Chris Cohen, and the Girls Track Head Coach, Jane-Reimer-Morgan, were each named Section 6AA Coaches of the Year.  -- Minnetonka athletes are at the top of their game as the spring sports season comes to an end. Boys Track, Girls Track and Boys Golf all won section championships. Boys Track: The boys track and field team has had a stellar season so far, winning the 2012 Lake Conference Championship Meet, the Section 6AA meet as well as the 2012 State True Team Championship. The team will send 13 participants to the state meet at Hamline University on June 8 and 9. Girls Track: The girls track and field team won the 2012 Lake Conference Championship and the Section 6AA meet. The team also posted …

Sports Roundup: Skippers, Royals Ease Into Schedule

Minnetonka and Hopkins athletic programs both had light slates on first day of school.

Minnetonka and Hopkins athletic teams eased into their post-Labor Day schedules on Tuesday as only a small sampling of Skippers and Royals squads returned to competition on the first day of school. Minnetonka Girls Soccer Maggie Crist and Abbie Kuzara both scored as the Minnetonka girls soccer team defeated visiting Shakopee, 2-1, on Tuesday night to improve to 4-0. The Skippers host Minneapolis Southwest on Wednesday night in their lone remaining game of the week. Minnetonka Boys Soccer The Minnetonka boys soccer team fell to 1-3 on the season after a 1-0 loss to visiting Shakopee on Tuesday night. Local Johanna Thill placed sixth at February's U.S. National Juniors Fencing Championships.

Seven years ago, Johanna Thill was playing pirates with her brother’s friends and couldn’t understand why they were so much better than her. When the boys explained that they took fencing classes at Minnesota Sword Club, Thill decided to check out the sport for herself. The Chanhassen student’s swordsmanship has come a long way since then. This February, she placed sixth in the under-20 division at the U.S. National Juniors Championships. Thill, now 17, said she enjoys the speed and intensity of saber competition, her chosen form of fencing. She also likes that smaller athletes can use superior skill to beat larger opponents . “If I’m fencing boys, I try to hit on the wrist a lot because it’s a closer target and I’m shorter than most of …

Skippers Battle Competition And Elements

Playing in wildly varying weather, Minnetonka High School teams continue spring sports season.

Doing the best that they can against wildly varying weather conditions, Minnetonka High School teams continue to compete in the early stages of their respective seasons despite Mother Nature's folly. Boys Lacrosse: 3-0 To Open Season Decisive victories against visiting Bloomington Jefferson and Chaska/Chanhassen on Saturday and Monday nights have boosted the Minnetonka boys lacrosse team to a 3-0 record. The Skippers topped the Jaguars 11-2 and the Hawks 9-1 and now prepare for the Lake Conference opener at Wayzata on Thurday night at 7:30 p.m. in the lone game of the week. Chase Fisher leads Minnetonka with six goals, with Teddy O'Reilly, Jack Denton, Stewart Usher and Parker Weinstock each notching four goals apiece over the first three …
