The former Hopkins basketball star’s plans are not known.
Former Hopkins High School basketball star Joe Coleman on Tuesday asked University of Minnesota Coach Richard Pitino to be released from the team, the Pioneer Press reported. The Pioneer story does say what plans Coleman has if he’s released. Coleman was named Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball in 2011 and helped the Royals to three straight Class AAAA title championships. Coleman kicked off his time with the Gophers by winning the university’s annual dunk contest in his freshman year. And in January of that season, he was named the Big 10 freshman of the week. He’s scored 516 total points—averaging 7.2 points per game and shooting .467, according to the University of Minnesota. Click here to read the full story.

The Hopkins basketball star put up 12 points in Saturday’s game.
Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey received the Purple Team’s MVP award at Saturday’s Women's Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game, the association announced. The game, played in New Orleans on the same court as the NCAA women’s Final Four, featured the top 20 high school seniors in the country. Coffey scored 12 points, hitting five of nine shots from the field. She also snagged one steal and three rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Purple Team lost to the Black Team 70-74. Coffey entered the game coming off a standout season. Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey put up two points and snagged six rebounds in Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American Game, the Chicago Tribune reported. Coffey played on the East team, which lost 92-64. The McDonald’s All-American game is a prestigious tournament for rising stars. Coffey was among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. Just 24 girls and 24 boys were selected for the final roster. Coffey and Braham High School’s Rebekah Dahlman were just the ninth and 10th Minnesotans to be named McDonald's All-Americans. The one-time Hopkins star and Ivy League rookie of the year scored five points against New Mexico.
One-time Hopkins star Siyani Chambers continued his outstanding freshman season at Harvard by helping the Crimson to its first NCAA tournament victory Thursday night. The 14th-seeded Crimson upset No. 3 seed New Mexico 68-62. Chambers made five points and seven assists and snagged two rebounds during 40 minutes of play, according to the ESPN box score. Harvard will next take on sixth-seeded Arizona at 5:10 p.m. March 23 in the Round of 32. The win follows Chambers’ unanimous selection as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy pick. Hopkins beat St. Michael-Albertville 77-58.
No. 1 seed Hopkins sailed through the class AAAA quarterfinal of the state girls basketball tournament with a 77-58 victory over St. Michael-Albertville. Hopkins got jumped out to an early lead—scoring 40 points to STMA’s 22 in the first period. The Knights’ second-period total was within a point of the Royals’ 37 points—including five free throws in the final two minutes—but the damage had already been done by then. Hopkins took advantage of STMA’s inability to hold on to the ball, scoring 24 points off Knights turnovers. Hopkins High School basketball teams feature prominently in Breakdown Sports USA’s annual March Madness state tournament preview, which was released Tuesday. The annual publication declared the Royals as the top girls team regardless of class and predicted that they’d win section 6AAAA—“also known as ‘The Hopkins Section,’” the magazine wrote—and then go on to win the class AAAA championship. For the second time this year, former Hopkins basketball star Sydney Coffey has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. “Coffey continues to cement herself as one of the best rookies in the MAAC, averaging nine points and 4.5 rebounds while making her fourth career start in Marist (College’s) two dominating wins this past weekend,” the conference stated. She started Sunday against Loyola, scored 16 points and snagged four rebounds—in addition to blocking two shots and going five for six from the free throw line. Former Hopkins High School star Brianna Williams is leaving the University of North Dakota after two years with the team, coach Travis Brewster announced Tuesday on the UND athletics website. Williams is leaving the program, effective immediately, with fellow sophomore Cy'erra Mills, an Osseo High School graduate. Both intend to transfer to unspecified schools after the spring semester. UND finishes its regular season March 9. Williams played in all 27 games of this season. She made 19 starts and averaged 18.9 minutes and 3.5 points per game. The girls beat Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. The boys beat Centennial 73-62.
Both Hopkins boys’ and girls’ teams came away with wins Saturday at the Ninth-Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center. In what Breakdown Sports USA called “arguably the most physical game of the day” the Royals’ girls’ team defeated Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. Hopkins led by just five points at the end of the first half but surged ahead in the second. Hopkins senior Nia Coffey, whom Breakdown Sports USA ranked second in its preseason rankings, led the game with 19 points. Freshman Nia Hollie was second for the Royals with 12 points.
