The city of Minnetonka will hold a municipal election this fall. City seats that will be on the November 5 general election ballot include the mayor and two at-large council seats. Filings for these offices open Tuesday, May 21, and remain open through Tuesday, June 4. Interested persons may file for these offices during regular city hall hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The filing fee is $5. Please note city offices will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. To be eligible for office, candidates must be at least 21 years of age upon assuming office, and be a resident of Minnetonka for at least 30 days prior to the general election. From the city of Minnetonka: Decorative railings have recently been installed on the pedestrian bridge spanning Minnehaha Creek at Baker Road in Minnetonka. Rock walls were added in the gaps between the railings and the bridge. A dedication of the park is being planned for June 22 during the Ice Cream Social. The Upper Minnehaha Creek Corridor extends from the creek headwaters at Gray’s Bay for six miles through the city of Minnetonka, encompassing nearly one-third of the creek’s length. This area is unique in many ways—most notably, about 85 percent of the adjoining land is either publicly owned or controlled. On Friday, March 8, bring kids ages 4–10 to the Williston Fitness Center for a pizza dinner (6 p.m.), swimming, playing in the Williston Treehouse, playing games, making arts and crafts and watching a movie. Four- and five-year-olds will be restricted to the splash pad pool. Drop kids off at 5:30 p.m.; pick them up by 10 p.m. Make sure to bring a swimsuit and towel. Mayor Terry Schneider said the city hopes to help turn Ridgedale Center into a destination instead of just a place to buy shoes.
In early January, Macy’s announced the consolidation of its two separate stores in Minnetonka's Ridgedale Center into one expanded location beginning in early 2014 freeing up space for a new Nordstrom store. But Minnetonka city officials don't want to stop there. They'd like to see Ridgedale become less of a shopping mall and more of a destination. At Wednesday's State of the City address, Mayor Terry Schneider said a new upscale restaurant will be added around the time Nordstrom joins retailers in the mall. "This will change the dynamics of the mall considerably," he said. "We would like to see a place where people can go for other things than just to buy a pair of shoes." As Minnetonka residents grow older, the city deals with issues like senior housing.
At Wednesday's State of the City address, Minnetonka Mayor Terry Schneider talked about the aging population of Minnetonka. As more and more baby boomers retire, concerns arise about the amount of senior housing and attracting younger people to the homes left behind by baby boomers.
