Making Christmas Merry for More Than 1,000 Local Children

A local family resource center is making it possible for more than 1,000 kids in the area to have a Merry Christmas this season. ResourceWest, the Hopkins Minnetonka Family Resource Center, hosts the Toy Chest Drive, a seasonal program that has provided presents for families in need for 18 years. “I want my kids to have something to unwrap under the tree,” said Amanda, a mother of three elementary-age children from Hopkins. Amanda is one of the many parents who signed up for the program this year due to financial difficulty. While in the process of moving, Amanda said her storage unit flooded and all of their belongings were ruined. “We have to start over completely,” she said. “Everything we accumulated for years on end is just destroyed…

ResourceWest Seeks Toys for Toy Chest Drive

This seasonal program provides new toys and gifts to children and teens through senior high.

Registration opened Tuesday for ResourceWest’s annual Toy Chest Drive. This seasonal program provides new toys and gifts to children and teens through senior high living in Deephaven, Excelsior, Greenwood, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Shorewood and Woodland. Families receive one large item, two smaller items, and stocking stuffers for each child. The program provided gifts to more than 1,350 children in 2010—a sharp increase compared to the 1,020 children who received gifts in 2009. Families that qualify for free or reduced lunch can call 952-988-5350 to sign up for the program. ResourceWest will be collecting new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 19.
