The Shady Oak Beach Community Play Area will be open this year from May 1–Oct. 31. Shady Oak Beach will be open from June 8–Aug. 26.
The Shady Oak Beach Community Play Area will be open this year from May 1–Oct. 31, with the exception of two one-week periods: May 29–June 7 and August 27–September 3. These two one-week closings of the play area are necessary to open and close the season for the Shady Oak Beach swimming area. Shady Oak Beach will be open from June 8–Aug. 26. The new community play area, installed in 2011, offers multiple play areas for ages 1 through 12. The cities of Hopkins and Minnetonka received a $187,500 Hennepin Youth Sports Program grant to develop this new play area. This is the fifth in a series of articles about places to swim in Minnetonka.
Editor's Note: We're doing a preview of the best swimming holes in Minnetonka, marking the first week of summer vacation. The Ridgedale YMCA features an indoor pool with six lanes, a whirlpool, a diving board, a youth swim team and a swim academy. "I think [the Ridgedale YMCA] has a great family feel," said Shannon Kinstler, Aquatic Product Mgr. with the YMCA. "At a lot of YMCA's we service everybody, but we have a lot of things for adults and for families." One of the nice features about the Ridgedale Y, according to Kinstler, is the swim team that's available to children. "Our swim team is for kids of all ages and abilities," she said. Renovations allowed the community center to expand its swimming programs.
Residents have more swimming opportunities at Eisenhower Community Center because of renovations that allowed the center to expand its programs and bring in more people. During winter break, the pool will have open swim for third through sixth graders from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 27 through Dec. 29. Lifeguards are on duty.
