Student Spotlight: When she walks onto the graduation stage, Marley McCarthy will be following in her mom's and grandparents’ footsteps.
Marley McCarthy will don a graduation cap and gown next month, becoming the third generation of her family to graduate from Minnetonka. “It gives me an interesting view of school, knowing that my family grew up in the same place,” said McCarthy. Her mother, Tippy McInerny, is a 1981 Minnetonka High School graduate. Her grandparents, Mary Jane Peterson McInerny and Bob McInerny, graduated from Deephaven High in the late 1940s. Deephaven High later consolidated with Excelsior High into Minnetonka High School. The school has changed over the years, with additions and renovations from classrooms to arts and athletic facilities. “I get lost there now,” said McCarthy's mom. The Minnetonka student body has changed as well. “The way kids …

Student Spotlight: Senior Hannah Van Ochten plans to turn her interest in math and science into a pharmacy career.
Hannah Van Ochten’s goal is to don the white lab coat of a pharmacist. The Minnetonka High School senior will attend the University of Iowa this fall to major in pre-pharmacy. “I wanted to go to a Big Ten school in the Midwest, and Iowa is ranked high in the country for pharmacy,” she said. As a future pharmacist, Van Ochten weighs in on current issues surrounding prescription drugs. “Some drugs are good for people with serious depression or ADHD, but most people who get these drugs could function without them,” Van Ochten said. “For those who have less severe versions of ADHD, I feel like those drugs are an easy way out of learning effective study habits and time management.” According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the U.S…

A weekly update to help you keep up with the news updates and conversation on Minnetonka Patch's Facebook page and what Patch users are saying in the comments section.
Your Minnetonka Patch Facebook page needs fans! Thanks for telling your friends to like Minnetonka Patch and keep spreading the word to the uninformed. With Senate approval coming on Thursday by a 36-30 vote, a new Minnesota Vikings stadium is on the way. The only remaining stage now is a signature from Gov. Mark Dayton (a stadium supporter), so we wanted to know how Patch readers were feeling about the decision. According to our unscientific poll, as of 12 a.m. Friday, 298 people have voted with 57 percent happy about the passing of the bill. Stefanie 'Oberts' Heine – “YES!!!" Bobby – "I'm surprised to see this didn't end up happening in Arden Hills. What happened to that plan? Was clean up too expensive?" Melissa Dahl – "Yeah soooooo …

Student Spotlight: Rashad Cohen plans to continue his track career at St. Cloud State.
A self-described “biggest momma’s boy ever,” Rashad Cohen plans to pamper his mom this Mother’s Day. “My sisters and I will take her out to eat and I will probably get her this fancy coffee machine because she likes her coffee in the morning,” said the Minnetonka High School senior. Cohen’s mother, Katrice, has been a powerful influence in his life. “My mom raised three kids by herself before my father came into our life,” said Cohen. “She mentors teens. I see how happy she gets when she helps kids out with their lives. I can go to her when I’m going through hard times.” But it was Cohen’s father, Chris, that introduced him to his greatest passion: running track. “He signed me up for track when I was in fifth grade,” said Cohen. “I knew …

Student Spotlight: Love of theater led Katie Halloran to Minnetonka High School.
In second grade, Katie Halloran got a part in a musical. She’s been singing and acting ever since. The Minnetonka High School junior is currently rehearsing for her role in Legally Blonde at Minnetonka Theatre. “Playing a ditzy and enthusiastic sorority girl is something I never thought I'd do, because I'm nothing like my character,” said Halloran. “But I love the challenge.” “It's fun to get onstage and become a completely different person,” she added. “When you get to play a variety of characters, it opens your mind to other points of view.” The theater program is what lured Halloran to Minnetonka from Orono High School last fall. “I saw Minnetonka's production of Phantom of the Opera and when the show ended I kept saying, ‘I have to go…

Student Spotlight: Growing up abroad sparked Jessica Ibri's interest in languages and cultures.
Jessica Ibri doesn’t have a hometown. “Growing up I moved six times,” said the Minnetonka High School senior. “I was born in Boston, then we moved to Edina, Mexico, Chile, Switzerland, Mexico again, and now Minnetonka.“ Ibri moved to Minnetonka four years ago from Mexico City. She keeps in touch with some of her Mexican friends. “I was surprised by how accepting the people can be and how passionate and proud they are of their culture,” said Ibri. Despite her ties to Mexico, she doesn’t have plans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5. “Cinco de Mayo is a huge thing in the U.S., but not so much in Mexico,” explained Ibri. “My favorite Mexican celebrations are their Independence Day and the Day of the Dead. I think those holidays are more …

Student Spotlight: Daniel Wang hopes to turn his passion for math into a career in medicine.
Pi Day is not a holiday most people observe. But to Daniel Wang, it has a significant meaning. Pi Day is the designated nickname for March 14, or 3/14, because the mathematical constant “pi” is 3.14. To the Minnetonka High School senior, Pi Day is when Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) delivers its admission decision letters to applicants like Wang. So far, Wang has been accepted to California Institute of Technology and is waiting for responses from MIT, Stanford, Princeton and Yale. College coursework shouldn’t be a problem for Wang, who takes a demanding load of advanced placement classes at Minnetonka. His favorite class? “Multivariable Calculus/IB Further Mathematics Standard Level,” he said. Try saying that ten times. “…

On the trail and on the track, Minnetonka senior Zach Goldberg paces himself for success.
Even during this winter's snow drought, Zach Goldberg has hit the ski trails every day. “I go where they make snow, like Theodore Wirth Park or Elm Creek,” said the Minnetonka High School senior and member of the Nordic (cross-country) ski team. He continues to ski daily, training for the next race. After the snow melts, Goldberg will lace up his running shoes for track and field. He started running in seventh grade and is now captain of the cross-country running team. Goldberg is eager for track to begin, since he missed the fall cross country running season due to a bout of mononucleosis. He suffered the classic symptom of mono: fatigue. “Now I feel great,” Goldberg said. His personal best is a 4:38 mile, and he hopes to beat that …

Student Spotlight: Connor Corgard is navigating his course to the 2016 Olympics.
Minnetonka High School senior Connor Corgard heads to Miami this week to sail in his biggest race to date. “My coach thinks I’m ready to compete in the Olympic trials,” said Corgard. “I am excited. It has been my dream my entire life to compete in a sport in the Olympics.” Corgard has come a long way since he started sailing just five years ago. “I taught myself to sail at our cabin,” he said. “My parents are teachers, so they have summers off and we spend time at Sunset Lake.” He was hooked from the start. “Sailing just clicked for me,” Corgard said. “I love being able to set my own course. Being out on the water is like another world to me.” Corgard will compete in the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta Jan. 22-28. The international …
