The Child Psychology class’ Royal Den offers 3- to 5-year-olds a fun learning experience—and valuable lessons for the high school students leading it.
Hopkins High School senior Marisa Schulz has practical experience babysitting and theoretical knowledge she gained from her child psychology classes. But when she started working in the Royal Den playschool, she found the situation to be unique. She didn’t know the children as well as those she babysat, so it was harder to know what they wanted. Schulz had to develop fun activities and use skills she learned in class, such as saying no in positive way. “It’s a lot more difficult, to be honest,” Shulz said. Royal Den is the culmination of Patty Ormson’s Child Psychology II class. The Main Street School of Performing Arts was ranked 31st in the 2012 list.
U.S. News & World Report named Hopkins High School the 14th best high school in Minnesota, netting the school a silver medal in the 2012 rankings released Tuesday. The Main Street School of Performing Arts, which ranked 31st in the state, also received a silver medal. Ubah Medical Academy, which was not ranked, received a bronze medal. U.S. News compiled the rankings—in partnership with Washington, DC-based American Institutes for Research—using a three-part process to evaluate nearly 22,000 public high schools across the country. Hopkins High School senior Seth Gellman and junior Chandler Luhowskyj won for a nine-month project that teaches fellow students about financial literacy.
Hopkins High School senior Seth Gellman and junior Chandler Luhowskyj had worked on a financial literacy curriculum for nine months. They coordinated with staff in every school to line up instruction times. They reached virtually every student in the school district. So when it was announced that their project won first at last week’s DECA State Career Development Conference, there was one feeling that rose above all others: relief. “It’s a long project. It’s been a lot of months. It’s more relief that we made it. You never really know,” Gellman said. The students assembled the sandwiches Monday for Minneapolis Recreation Development, Inc.
Eisenhower Elementary and XinXing Academy students found out Monday just how much good some coins can do. With a portion of $500 raised by a penny war in November, 200 fifth- and sixth-grade students and 14 volunteers assembled 750 sandwiches for Minneapolis Recreation Development, Inc.’s 363 Days Food program. In addition, the school hosted a sock drive that brought in nearly 750 socks for the program to deliver. “If it weren’t for the schools like this, churches and businesses, I wouldn’t be making sandwiches for 1,000 people a day,” said MRD founder Allan Law. The students’ work featured endangered animals with colorful patterns.
Gatewood Elementary fifth grade students looked to Australia for inspiration as they wound up their “Aboriginality” section Wednesday in Karen Anderson’s art class. The students viewed traditional and contemporary aboriginal art. They then picked an endangered animal, drew it and filled it in with colorful, aboriginal-inspired patterns. After they were through, they added a background with pastels. The subjects of the art ranged from Australian animals, such as koalas, to species all the way on the other side of the globe, such as polar bears. “Really, I have the best artists in the world,” Anderson said. The Youth Art Exhibit runs through April 8 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.
Student art is normally consigned to the refrigerator. But on Tuesday, families filed into the Hopkins Center for the Arts to see more than 180 student works brightening up the Charles Redepenning Gallery. The paintings, sculptures, pottery and other works make up the Hopkins Youth Art Exhibit. Art teachers at local schools selected the works on display. In all, there were 120 pieces from elementary school students, 32 from junior high students and 30 from high school students. The exhibit is free and runs through April 8. Families enjoyed breakfast with Eisenhower Elementary students Tuesday during the first of two Community Breakfasts taking place as part of National Breakfast Week. The events are sponsored by a “Share Your Breakfast” grant from the Kellogg’s Action for Healthy Kids initiative. Kellogg’s will donate the monetary equivalent of a school breakfast up to $200,000—the equivalent of 1 million school breakfasts. John Narum's last Pep Fest show before he graduates was a big one.
Hopkins High School senior and 2005 world yo-yo champion John Narum wanted his last Pep Fest show before he graduated to be big. As his fellow students have come to expect, Narum wowed Friday’s crowd with eye-popping tricks that involved lying on the floor, doing handstands and kneeling on the ground—all while slinging yo-yos through the air. But when the show drew to a close, he told the crowd he needed a volunteer for one more big trick. Narum scanned the audience and selected senior Olivia Hvass, his girlfriend of four months. Narum positioned Hvass’ arm carefully and did a modified “man on the flying trapeze” trick. Hopkins High School students showed their school spirit Friday morning at the spring Pep Fest. The band got the crowd going. A trio of dance groups kept up the beat. The drum line entertained.
