Disqualifications at State Cost Minnetonka Girls the State Swimming Title

What looked like a victory at state by 44.5 points ended in a fourth place finish for the Skipper swimming and diving team.

With a 44.5 point lead at the end of Saturday night, it appeared to be an amazing win for the Minnetonka Skippers in the Class 2A state swimming meet. However, officials ruled the team used an illegal entry on the final 400-yard freestyle relay team. This ruling took away both a first place finish in the race and 40 Skipper points.  Coach Dan Berve said he was responsible for the error. "That's my fault," Berve told the Star Tribune. "I did not submit that one properly." Even with the ruling on that relay, Minnetonka still would have taken the state title. However, the Minnesota State High School League found all three Minnetonka relay teams had entered illegally. The correct swimmers were not listed on the relay cards. Minnetonka dropped …

Another victory for the accountants of the world. Paperwork errors like this happen in golf all the time; to me, all it is is a way for accountant types to pretend that they are relevant in the competitive sports world. For this team to be dq-ed because the coach wrote down the wrong names is a travesty!   more ›

Minnetonka Qualifies 18 Individuals for State in Swim and Dive

All three relays and 18 athletes will compete at the state meet.

Minnetonka displayed unmatched depth as they qualified 18 individual athletes and all three relays for the state meet.   After Thursday’s swimming preliminaries, the Skippers had achieved 22 state qualifying times, but in Minnesota swimmers must swim those times at the finals to qualify for the state meet—or place first or second in each event.  Given the strength of the Lake Conference, placing in the top two means swimming much faster than the state cut. Additionally, the top four divers in sections qualify for the state meet.  The following athletes will represent Minnetonka at the state meet: Delaney Ambrosen: 200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle Annika Clinton: 1 Meter Diving Alexa Easley: 100 Fly Morgan Engel: 1 Meter Diving Hannah Gosen: 1 …

Minnetonka High School displayed a powerhouse of talent at the 6AA section meet as they earned the title of Section Champions.   After Thursday’s swimming preliminaries, the Skippers had qualified all 35 swims into the final rounds of the championship, with 28 swims in the top 8 and 7 consolation heat swims.  Three new varsity team records were set: 200 IM Relay (1:48.04), by Liz (E.) Kane, Mackenzie Smith, Cecelia Ostergren, and Tru Walor; Carolyn Kane in the 50 Freestyle (23.58, setting a meet record as well as team record), and Amelia Schilling in the 500 Freestyle (4:53.96, smashing her own record as well as the meet and pool records). Minnetonka's Kane Twins Keep the Fun in Competition

The twin sisters will bring their care-free attitude to the state meet this weekend.

Carolyn and Liz Kane never take swimming too seriously.  The Minnetonka girls swimming and diving team’s twin sisters are equal parts competitors, equal parts “goof balls.” It’s what makes them successful in the pool and unforgettable out of the water. Just ask Skippers first-year coach Dan Berve, who met the Kanes several years ago while working a summer swim camp. “I remember them because they are the exact same way they are today,” Berve said. “It’s been fun watching them. I’m happy to have a chance to work with them this year because they’ve been a big part of our success.” Natural leaders with an ability to make even the most laborious practices fun, the Kanes make up at least a share of seven entrants Minnetonka will send to the …

State Swimming Title? Minnetonka's Freestyle Leads The Way

The Skippers' unusually deep freestyle talent has them in position to win a state championship on Saturday.

Minnetonka girls swimming and diving coach Dan Berve fancies himself fortunate. In a sport where depth is a necessity, his Skippers squad has the numbers and the talent to continuously compete for a state championship. This year will be no different. Minnetonka will send 17 entrants to the Class AA state meet this weekend at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, and despite facing difficult competition across the board the Skippers like their chances. Their biggest asset? A bevy of talented freestyle swimmers. Swimming prelims begin Friday at 6 p.m., and the championships begin Saturday at 6 p.m. “If you can be strong in those freestyles, it definitely helps  your chances of putting a good team together,” Berve said. “I feel like …
