Earth Day 2011: Minnetonka Mom Turns Hobby into Eco-Friendly Business

Melissa Gausmann is an experimentalist. If you asked her, the former teacher and mother of three wouldn’t tell you that. But the layers of newspaper lining her kitchen table would suggest otherwise. “I’ve always been a crafter,” says the Hamline Master’s student, “I’ve enjoyed making crafts ever since I was a little girl.” And as an adult, she’s enjoyed finding unique crafts on etsy.com, a website that allows people to open their own online craft store to sell to consumers. “It was one of those things I’ve wanted to do - to open a craft store on etsy –,” says Gaussmaan, “the crayon thing just happened.” “The crayon thing” is her newest, accidental hobby. “I would play with my kids and I would experiment with melting regular Crayola crayons…

Local Mom Turns Passion Into Global Success

Tessa Pfeifer began teaching dance to finance her entertainment business. Today, Dancercise Kids is a thriving business.

Little did she know that her unique methods of dance instruction would eventually turn into the phenomenon now known as Dancercise Kids. “It is real dance, including ballet, tap and jazz along with fitness, creative movements and tumbling,” Pfeifer said. “Changing the songs and dances each month keeps the lessons exciting, fun and engaging for boys and girls." Minnetonka Mom Turned Entrepreneur

Minnetonka mom, Marri Anderson, has turned an interest into a home business.

Marri Anderson is a stay-at-mom mom in Minnetonka. She's also an entrepreneur. In 2009 she set out on a search for something for her daughter, Caden to wear. Unenthusiastic with the clothes she found, Anderson decided to make something herself. That's when the kids clothing line, Little Luca was born. "I thought it would be a fun way for her to have cute, unique things and it also saved me money," Anderson said. "I began giving gifts and selling things to family and friends and I have grown into a real business." Named for her children, Luke, 6, and Caden, 4, Anderson runs Little Luca out of her Minnetonka home. Using Facebook , by hosting trunk shows in the area, and by networking through the group Red Shandelier,  the business has …

Minnetonka Mom Finds Success Selling Skin Care

Jodi Fidler went to a party and found a new career.

Looking for a product that would improve her sun damaged skin, Minnetonka resident Jodi Fidler attended an event for the Rodan + Fields® Dermatologists skincare line at a friend's house this past summer. By September, Fidler was herself an independent consultant for Rodan + Fields® Dermatologists. Fidler has two daughters and is a part time chiropractor at Davis Chiropractic in St. Louis Park.  When she took on this job, Fidler wanted to increase her working hours. And after signing on with Rodan + Fields® Dermatologists, she has done just that-- by working for herself. "The amazing thing with this business is that I get to set my own hours," Fidler said. "It works perfectly with my kids' schedules." And so far, balancing work life …
