Royals Breeze Past STMA in 1st Round of State Girls Basketball Tourney

Hopkins beat St. Michael-Albertville 77-58.

No. 1 seed Hopkins sailed through the class AAAA quarterfinal of the state girls basketball tournament with a 77-58 victory over St. Michael-Albertville. Hopkins got jumped out to an early lead—scoring 40 points to STMA’s 22 in the first period. The Knights’ second-period total was within a point of the Royals’ 37 points—including five free throws in the final two minutes—but the damage had already been done by then. Hopkins took advantage of STMA’s inability to hold on to the ball, scoring 24 points off Knights turnovers. McDonald’s All American Nia Coffey continued her strong season with a game-leading 22 points. The senior hit seven of 14 from the courts, including three of five three-point attempts, and sank five of seven free-throw …

The site’s annual state tournament preview, which predicts that Hopkins will win the championship, also named Nia Coffey the No. 2 player in the state.

Hopkins High School basketball teams feature prominently in Breakdown Sports USA’s annual March Madness state tournament preview, which was released Tuesday. The senior was named as the No. 2 player in the state, the Class AAAA player of the year, the section 6AAAA player of the year and a finalist for best scoring performance. Hopkins Alternative Program to Leave the Pavilion

The program will be moved to Intermediate District 287’s West Education Center in Minnetonka starting in the 2013-14 school year.

Hopkins Public Schools is moving its Off Campus Pavilion Alternative Program out of the Pavilion next year, which could stretch the financials of a city facility that’s right on the cusp of profitability. The school district pays the City of Hopkins $50,000 a year to use the Pavilion as a site to teach students who benefit from an off-campus, small-school setting. But starting in the 2013-14, the program will be moved to Intermediate District 287’s West Education Center in Minnetonka, said Nik Lightfoot, the director of administrative services for Hopkins Public Schools. “287 offers a wider range of programming and services than we are able to offer at the off-campus program,” Lightfoot said. District 287 is a consortium of 12 west metro …

Sequestration’s Impact on Hopkins Schools Should Be Minimal

Federal funding makes up a small portion of the district’s revenue.

Hopkins Public Schools does not plan to replace money lost from the sequestration with state or local funds and does not expect to lose any staff, said John Toop, the district’s business services director. The district stands to lose 5.7 percent of its federal funding, but federal money made up just 4.5 percent, or $3.6 million, of the district’s revenue in 2012. That money would not be lost until the 2013-14 school year because federal money is forward-funded, according to National Public Radio. Much of the money is concentrated just two areas. The district receives about $1.6 million in federal money that goes toward special education. With sequestration, that total drops by about $92,000. The district had already been planning for a 10 …

Sydney Coffey Named MAAC Rookie of the Week — Again

The former Hopkins star was recognized for her performance this weekend against Rider and Loyola.

For the second time this year, former Hopkins basketball star Sydney Coffey has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. “Coffey continues to cement herself as one of the best rookies in the MAAC, averaging nine points and 4.5 rebounds while making her fourth career start in Marist (College’s) two dominating wins this past weekend,” the conference stated. She started Sunday against Loyola, scored 16 points and snagged four rebounds—in addition to blocking two shots and going five for six from the free throw line. Working off the bench Friday versus Rider, she grabbed five rebounds. Coffey is the quickest player to start under Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis, who’s in his…

Junior High IB Gets Favorable Reception From School Board

The board won’t vote on the proposal until March 21, but directors had good things to say Thursday.

Hopkins appears on the way to transforming its junior highs into International Baccalaureate schools. While the School Board didn’t vote on the idea Thursday, most of the directors praised the program—including Irma McIntosh Coleman, one of two directors who voted against the idea in March 2012. “I was one of those naysayers. … I really did not think that I could sit back, look and think that I could support that,” McIntosh Coleman told the teachers presenting the proposal. “But the more I look and hear you, we realize the impact of people like you in our buildings and our classrooms that truly make that difference.” IB’s Middle Years Programme provides an enhanced curriculum for grades six through 10, although Hopkins would only offer …

Hopkins School Board Approves Elementary Spanish Instruction

The district will teach Spanish in every elementary school starting in the 2013-14 school year.

Hopkins elementary students are set to receive regular Spanish instruction starting in the 2013-14 school year following a preliminary School Board vote Thursday to establish an elementary world languages curriculum. “World language has been in surrounding districts for several years. We do a great job with teaching kids culture, but it’s not a replacement for teaching kids world languages or languages other than English,” Superintendent John Schultz said. “It’s really the right thing to do in the21st Century. The board’s decision commits the district to spending $6 million over the next 10 years on elementary Spanish instruction. In the initial year, all elementary schools will provide world languages to kindergarteners and first graders…

Current research on language acquisition through FLES programs is mixed. Many experts agree that students who participate in a full immersion program starting at a young age are more likely to "speak" fluently. However, adolescents and adults learn languages quicker and are more likely to attain written fluency. FLES programs produce cultural awareness, but do not produce fluency, oral or written…   more ›

Watch These Clips of ‘Hopkins’ Students Misbehaving, Tell Us How You’d Handle It

The school district is investigating videos that show apparent students smoking and damaging property, but Patch wants to hear your thoughts on what our role as a community is.

The investigation into a series of YouTube videos that show apparent Hopkins students vandalizing school property and breaking school rules is in the hands of the school district. Last week, a YouTube user who goes by “KneeGoobers" posted a video on the popular video-sharing site that captured a student smoking on a school bus and chasing other students with flames from a lit aerosol spray can in a school hallway. Earlier videos showed a teen vandalizing a public restroom, a young boy smoking in Knollwood Mall and other acts. A Minnetonka spokesman said Hopkins Public Schools is handling the issue and that the Minnetonka Police Department is not conducting any criminal investigation. St. Louis Park referred Patch to Knollwood Mall security…

The smoking on the bus should result in loss of bus privileges. The student should have to make restitution for the toilet paper holder. The biggest concern is the one with the aerosol can. It appears he is kidding around, but that could result in some serious injuries, some kids just do dumb things like this. My other concern would be where is the adult supervision? Perhaps Hopkins High needs to…   more ›
