Free workshops begin in March and are part of Hennepin County Library’s “Library Laboratory” series offering adults hands-on learning opportunities with local experts on a wide variety of subjects. Mary Jo Rasmussen and other instructors from Urban Relish will demonstrate how to make spice blends and grilling rubs at “Sugar & Spice” labs March 12-May 18. Hennepin County libraries will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), and Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day). The new book, The Casual Vacancy, is to be released later in September.
Harry Potter may have vanished into the past, but author J.K. Rowling is still around, with her for-adults book, The Casual Vacancy, due out Sept. 27. In Minnetonka, you can find the book at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. If you’re looking to check the book out from Hennepin County Libraries, 140 copies are on order. The bad news? There are already 1,207 requests for 75 books. However, you can stop by at Ridgedale Library or Minnetonka Library to check for one of the 63 copies that will be on Bestseller Express shelves. It costs $4 for 10 days to rent a Bestseller Express book at all Hennepin County libraries. The new book by the creator of Harry Potter is aiming this book at a grown-up audience. Do you have some “steampunk” books on your coffee table? Chances are, if you have a teen in the house, you do. “’Steampunk’ is a fairly new genre that combines alternate history and low-tech machines that can do very high-tech things,” said Johannah Genett, Hennepin County Library program librarian. The first day of school has come and gone for most students in the Minnetonka area. As the homework starts coming home, it's not too early to think about ways to help your child succeed. According to the Hennepin County Library's "Autumn at the Library" catalog, Homework Rescue, LearningExpress Library and the Homework Hub can all be valuable resources to students.
