Dayton Tells TwinWest Chamber He'll Revise His Budget Proposal

On Friday morning, Gov. Mark Dayton told TwinWest Chamber of Commerce members that he will take a business-to-business sales tax plan out of his revised budget next week, according to media reports. MPR reported the governor "has heard a lot of concerns about his proposal to add sales tax to the services business sell each other." Last month, a tax policy expert told minnpost.com that extending sales tax to these services—such as accounting, advertising and legal—was not a good idea. “It is very rare when all economists agree,” said John Spry, a professor of business economics at the University of St. Thomas and an expert on state tax policy. “But I am still trying to find an economist who studies this area who thinks taxing business-to-…

Janitors Union Reports Reaching Tentative Agreement

SEIU Local 26 says three-year contract would give janitors pay raises, preserves full-time jobs. The janitors work in several Twin Cities including Roseville.

The bargaining committee for organized janitors, who work at office and institutional buildings across the Twin Cities, late this afternoon reached a tentative contract settlement with their employers, according to the workers' union.  The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 said it had reached a three-year deal with the Minneapolis-St. Paul Contract Cleaners Association that includes pay raises, healthcare improvements and certain job security. The deal came just after 4 p.m. today (Saturday) after more than 31 straight hours of bargaining, the union said in a press statement. Janitors still need to ratify the contract. Area Janitors, Security Officers Taking Strike Authorization Vote Saturday

The two groups, represented by SEIU Local 26, will decide whether to give their bargaining committees the power to call a strike, if necessary, in the lagging contract talks.

  Hundreds of Twin Cities-area union janitors and security officers are slated Saturday morning to vote on whether to give their bargaining committees the right to call strikes in the stalled labor negotiations.  Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 said it has been bargaining for months for new contracts for its more than 6,000 members who are janitors and security officers, and that the groups have been working since Dec. 31 without new contracts. The union said both of the labor bargaining committees have recommended a "yes" vote for a strike authorizstion.  The union workers, who will take their strike authorization vote at 11 a.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center, are "facing the threat of reduced hours and …
