Minnetonka Nips Hopkins in Extra-Inning Thriller

The victory clinched a share of the Lake County Conference title for the Skippers, which it will share with Edina and Eden Prairie.

"Give me a chance," Minnetonka High School junior Luke "Petey" Petterson said to nobody in particular as he took a cut in the on deck circle. "I just want one chance to win this." Twenty seconds later, with the bases loaded and the game tied at one in extra innings, Petterson was in an 0-2 hole and fighting to keep his at bat alive. After fouling off two curve balls, Pederson spanked a fastball sharply into left-center field—scoring Axel Twenge from third winning and giving the Skippers the win. The victory clinched a share of the Lake County Conference title for the Skippers, which it will share with Edina and Eden Prairie. Minnetonka's regular season finale is a home game scheduled for tonight at 6:30 p..m. against Chaska. The section …

Minnesota Legislature Approves Education Bill, Includes All-Day Kindergarten

Although school districts like Minnetonka and Eden Prairie still need to 'dig into the details,' things are looking good for parents of future kindergartners.

A $15.7 billion education package that will "make life easier" for working parents, according to the bill's supporters, now awaits Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton's signature as work begins to wrap up on the 2013 Legislative Session.  The omnibus bill, which means one version of the bill was introduced in each chamber, was approved with small support from Republicans over the weekend, picking up five GOP votes in the state house and four more in the senate.  Sen. Ann Rest of New Hope was the lone "no" vote from the DFL side of the aisle in the Senate, creating the 41-26 margin.  The bill raises the state's method of funding local schools by $156 per pupil for a total of nearly $235 million in new money over the next two years. The bulk of that …

Erik Paulsen: 'No American Should Have Right to Free Speech Threatened by IRS'

The congressman for Minnesota's Third District expressed outrage at the IRS scandal on the Hugh Hewitt show.

U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN) issued a timely Facebook posting Monday about the tornadoes in Oklahoma: My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Oklahoma and those affected by today’s devastation. Please stay safe. Congress on Your Corner Paulsen held a "Congress on Your Corner" Monday at the Cub Foods store in Maple Grove. (See the Storify above or at Storify.com.) IRS Scandal Paulsen appeared on the Hugh Hewitt Show last week to discuss the IRS targeting of groups based on political affiliation (listen to the program here). Paulsen summarized his position at his blog: It is unconscionable that the IRS deliberately targeted individuals based on their political beliefs. Absolutely no one should come under extra scrutiny from the IRS …

Twin Cities Chambers Condemn Failure of Transit Tax

The proposed sales tax for transit improvements did not make it into the final transportation bill.

The presidents of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber and Saint Paul Area Chamber on Sunday condemned the Legislature’s inability to approve a dedicated funding source to expand Twin Cities transit. Last month, the Minneapolis and Saint Paul chambers endorsed a metrowide sales tax of up to half a cent that would have funded transit improvements. Transit tax proposals presented during the session ranged from a quarter of a cent to three-quarters of a cent. However, a sales tax for transit did not make it in to the final version of the Omnibus Transportation Finance bill. The bill did include $37 million to keep the Southwest Light Rail Transit project moving forward. But Minneapolis chamber President Todd Klingel and Saint Paul chamber …

Neighbors Oppose Medical Facility in Minnetonka

City staff and the planning commission agree that the medical center would bring change to the Highway 7/Highwood Drive area. However, they find the change reasonable.

Minnetonka's planning commission is recommending that the city council approve a North Memorial medical facility between Highwood Drive and Highway 7, but some of the residents in the area are less than thrilled by the idea. About 70 neighbors on Highwood Drive are against the development, according to Ivy Chang, a media contact for the group who lives in the neighborhood. According to Chang, the project is being approved although it appears to them that traffic on Highwood Drive was not even considered, the parking spaces are not in line with the square footage of the building, and lights and noise from the medical center will be heard 24-hours a day in the neighborhood. "The neighborhood realizes that the city wants developments in that …

East Tonka Little League Players Weigh the Case of the St. Paul Saints

Players served as 'jurors' during a legal-themed game.

Players from the East Tonka Little League in Minnetonka headed to see the St. Paul Saints play the Gary SouthShore RailCats on May 11 at Midway Stadium—but this time they weren’t just there to watch. The players sat in “jury boxes” along the first- and third-base lines to decide close plays by raising “Safe” or “Out” signs. Like a criminal jury, there were 12 players in each jury box. The game was part of a legal-themed promotion done with Hamline University’s Law School, the New York Times reported Thursday. In addition to the jury boxes, umpire Mike Neubeck wore a judge’s robes. The Times notes that the young jurors left their jury boxes by the sixth inning. “I have to say I’m a little disappointed the jury left a few innings too soon,” …

How Should Twin Cities Suburbs Respond to Increasing Poverty?

A Brookings Institution study found that the number of poor in the Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs more than doubled over the past decade.

If the stressed food banks and increasing demand for social services weren’t enough proof, Twin Cities residents now have further evidence that poverty is part of the suburban landscape. A Brookings Institution study released Monday reports that the number of poor in Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs more than doubled between 2000 and 2011. The 127.9 percent increase in the suburbs was well above the 47.7 percent increase in urban areas. Click on the PDF to the right of the article to see a summary of the Twin Cities data. This is a trend providers have been well aware of for some time. Hennepin County's Human Services and Public Health Department is in the process of creating “social services hubs” in the suburbs specifically to create one-…
