Minnetonka Families Bowl for Dreams

Earlier this year, local mom  and her partner Dennis Moore started the Keys for Kids Foundation, which collects old keys and recycles them for profit. Every $5,000 raised through donated keys goes to The Sunshine Foundation, a national nonprofit that grants the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill or physically challenged children. 

This weekend, Keys for Kids held their “Bowl for Dreams” event to raise awareness about their group and The Sunshine Foundation. Anderson said about 20 local families showed up at to bowl, eat and participate in a raffle.

“It brought a lot of awareness to the program,” she told Patch.

Anderson became involved with The Sunshine Foundation when her own son, 11-year-old Khalil, a student a , made it onto the foundation’s dream list.

Because of a traumatic brain injury at birth, Khalil has autism, epilepsy and other developmental delays. Next month, he and his entire family will live out Khalil’s dream — boarding a plane to Florida to see the Shrek 4-D attraction at Universal Studios.

Since its founding in 1976, The Sunshine Foundation has fulfilled almost 35,000 dreams for children around the country.

Later this year and with her own son’s dream soon realized, Anderson will launch the first Minnesota volunteer chapter of The Sunshine Foundation, The Minnesota Dream Catchers.

The next Keys for Kids event is a car show that will take place August 27th in Mankato.
