'Community' Garage Sale Benefits Those in Need

Fourth annual event is Thursday at Clear Springs Elementary School.

Now that temperatures have warmed up, the season of garage sales is upon us. But in Minnetonka is looking to do more than get rid of a few old items. Instead, it hopes to provide support for local families in need.

The number of those families has risen in recent years, said Linda Roslansky, one of the event organizers.

"We want families who may need help to be able to get what they need for a small donation," she said.

Thursday, June 16, Roslansky hopes those "small donations" add up to more than $1,500 through the Clear Springs Annual Community Garage Sale. Proceeds go toward school supplies, clothing, field trips and activities for students, as well as the ICA Food Shelf.

"Each year, I’m amazed by the quality of the donations," said Clear Springs Elementary Principal Curt Carpenter. "Community members make these donations knowing they will not be compensated monetarily. However, the great feeling they receive is priceless."

Event organizers ask that people save their "good stuff" for the sale. The donation drop-off is Wed., June 15 from 4-7 p.m.

"Even if people don't have items to donate or need to buy anything, we are hoping that families stop by to visit, sort tables and drop a few dollars in our donation jar," Roslansky said.

None of the items at the garage sale are marked, meaning shoppers will get to name their own price.

Carpenter says that system "works well."

"The Clear Springs Annual Community Garage sale is a wonderful example of the great collaboration that exists between our school and our community," Carpenter said.
