Free Family Fun Day: Snakes

Sunday, July 7, from 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. Discover the unique adaptations that snakes have, see what a snake feels like and learn to hold one. This program is free and open to all ages.

Owl in the Yard

Sunday, July 7, from 1-3 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Stop by to visit our resident great horned owl.  Examine owl artifacts and hear their calls. Bring a camera for close-up shots. This program is free and open to all ages.

Meet the Animals

Sunday, July 7, from 12:30-2 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Meet a turtle, snake, toad and salamander up close. This program is free and open to all ages.

Sunday, July 7, from 3-4 p.m., at Richardson Nature Center, in Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington. This program is free and open to all ages.

Wild Edibles

Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m.-noon, at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. Take a hike and sample things as we go, and then harvest some garlic mustard to make garlic mustard pesto. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Call 763-559-6700 to make a reservation and reference activity number #316917-02. This program is for ages 15+.

Butter ‘N’ Vittles

Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m.-noon, Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Discover — and taste — some old-fashioned food or wild plants. Try your hand at making butter in a butter churn at the Pierre Bottineau House. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Call 763-559-6700 to make a reservation and reference activity number #313202-03. This program is for ages 7+.

Saturday Morning on the Farm

Saturday, July 13, from 9:30 a.m.-noon, at Gale Woods Farm, Minnetrista. Explore the Gale Woods Farm barn, where you can meet animals, assist a Gale Woods farmer with chores, and participate in other seasonal farm activities. Reservations are not required. Cost is $5 and children under 2 are admitted free.

Eco-Engineers

Saturday, July 13, from 1-3 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. We’ll look for inspiration from nature’s engineers — honeybees, beavers, birds, and plants — then test out designs of our own. Experiment with natural materials to engineer things that float, fly, and camouflage. Cost is $5 and this program is open to all ages.

Grimm Farmhouse Open House

Saturday, July 13, from 1-4 p.m., at Grimm Farm, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Step back in time and explore Wendelin Grimm’s farm.  See the restored 1870s house and fields where Grimm, a German immigrant, experimented with his alfalfa. Hear how his work transformed the Upper Midwest into America’s dairy belt. Experience the hands-on work and play of a late 1800s Minnesota farm. This program is free and open to all ages.
