Weekend Sports Roundup: Skippers Hoopsters Swept, Boys Hockey Wins

Minnetonka boys tripped in three overtimes at home, girls fall at Edina while gymnast Ryan qualifies for State on Friday night; Skippers pucksters defeat Buffalo on Saturday.

It was not the best of evenings for the Minnetonka hoopsters on Friday night as both the Skippers boys and girls were bested by Lake Conference rival Edina at home and away; however, gymnast Allie Ryan earned a state qualification while Saturday saw the 'Tonka boys hockey team top Buffalo.

Minnetonka's Allie Ryan qualified for the state gymnastics meet, held Feb. 25-26 at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion, with a fourth-place finish on balance beam in the Section 2AA championship on Friday.

The Skippers placed third as a team with a score of 138.7; Eden Prairie claimed the sectional championship with a 146.25.

Boys Hockey: Minnetonka 8, Buffalo 3

An 8-3 defeat of non-conference opponent Buffalo at the Pagel Sports Center concluded the Minnetonka boys hockey team's regular season with a 16-7-2 record.

The Skippers blew open a close game with a four-goal third period as Connor Ryan and Thomas Schutt each scored twice, with Michael Prochno, Michael Helmer, Vinni Lettieri and Erik Baskin all chipping in one tally apiece.

Alex Glockner and Matt Behounek split time in the Minnetonka net, making six and 11 saves, respectively.

Now the Skippers prepare for the 6AA playoffs, set to begin on Thursday. Minnetonka's seed has not been determined yet.

Boys Basketball: Edina 90, Minnetonka 86 (3OT)

The Minnetonka boys basketball team remained winless in Lake play this winter with a 90-86 loss in three overtimes to visiting Edina.

Neither team was able to manage much of a foothold in the contest through five intervals of play before the Hornets mustered up the victorious four-point spread.

Nick Latzke led all scorers with 32 points, while Skippers teammates Tommy McDermott and Andrew Turnblad recorded 18 and 14 points, respectively.

The loss dropped Minnetonka to 4-19 overall and 0-5 in the Lake as conference co-leader Eden Prairie comes for a visit next Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball: Edina 50, Minnetonka 49

In another hotly-contested matchup, the Minnetonka girls basketball team came up on the short end of a 50-49 loss at Edina.

Katy Winge led the Skippers with 14 points, while Ali McArthur scored 13 points in the loss.

Minnetonka, now 18-5 overall and 3-3 in the Lake, travels to Eden Prairie for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday night.
