Sports Roundup: Skippers, Royals Roll Into September

Minnetonka, Hopkins athletic programs ease into the Labor Day weekend with light mid-week schedules.

It was slow, but successful mid-week stretch for the Minnetonka and Hopkins sports teams, as the Skippers and Royals squads wrapped up their pre-Labor Day weekend schedules.

Minnetonka Girls Soccer

A 1-0 shutout of visiting Anoka improved the Minnetonka girls soccer team to 3-0 on the season.

Mary Stringini leads the Skippers with three goals over the first trio of matchups, with Maggie Crist and Taylor Morgan each contributing two scores apiece to their team's winning results; Ellie Crowell is pacing 'Tonka with five assists on the year. Goalkeepers Lizzie Crist and Brittany Plombon have split time in net, making six and four saves, respectively.

The Skippers next host Minneapolis Southwest at 5 p.m. Sept 6.

Minnetonka Volleyball

Improving to a perfect 4-0 on the season with its second-straight five-game match victory was the Minnetonka volleyball team, as the Skippers topped Hutchinson (25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 15-12) on Thursday at home.

Renee Hoffman leads 'Tonka with 41 kills and 10 service aces, with Laura Herman topping the Skippers with 57 digs and Elizabeth Borstad pacing the squad with 12 blocks.

The squad is actually not taking the Labor Day weekend off, instead taking part in the Eden Prairie Tournament on Saturday, beginning with a 9 a.m. match with Mayer Lutheran.

Hopkins Volleyball

The ninth-ranked Hopkins volleyball team bounced back from a loss to sixth-ranked Centennial on Tuesday by sweeping visiting Orono in three games (25-19, 25-12, 25-20) to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Individual statistics were not available. The Royals are now off until Sept. 9, when they take part in the Southwest MN Challenge tournament in Marshall.

Hopkins Cross-Country Running

The Hopkins cross-country running teams competed in the Matterhorn Invitational in Brooklyn Park on Thursday, with both the girls and bos squads finishing second to Eden Prairie with 63 and 45 points, respectively. Individual statistics were not available.

Next up for the Royals runners is a trip to Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista for an invitational meet at 3 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

A 4-3 win over visiting Benilde-St. Margaret's on Wednesday improved the Hopkins girls tennis team to 4-1 in dual matches this season. 

Individual statistics were not available. The Royals play at Minnetonka on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.
