Sports Roundup: Skippers 2, Hopkins 0

Minnetonka girls hockey wins regular-season finale, while boys hockey cruises in playoff opener.

Thursday night was kind to Minnetonka teams as not only did the girls hockey squad win at state, but the girls hoopsters took down a top conference rival while the boys hockey squad won its sectional opener — both against neighboring Hopkins.

Boys Hockey: Minnetonka 5, Hopkins 1

Vinni Lettieri scored twice, with Max Coatta, Erik Baskin and Sam Rothstein all adding a goal each as Minnetonka topped Hopkins, 5-1, in the Section 6AA playoff opener at Pagel Ice Arena.

Alex Glockner gave up a lone first period goal, but made 25 saves in the Skippers' net in the four-goal win that improved Minnetonka to 17-7-2 on the season.

The fourth-seeded Skippers take on No. 1 seed Eden Prairie on Saturday at either Braemar Ice Arena in Edina or the Bloomington Ice Garden. Exact location and time of the game have not yet been determined.

Girls Basketball: Minnetonka 74, Hopkins 71

A late basket and free-throw by Ali McArthur were the winning points for the Minnnetonka girls basketball team as the Skippers topped visiting Hopkins, 74-71, in the regular-season finale.

McArthur led Minnetonka with 19 points, with Katy Winge scoring 17 points and Joanna Hedstrom 12 points, with both Cassidy Smith and Jenny Blackley recording 11 points each.

The Skippers concluded its pre-playoff schedule with a 19-6 overall record and were 4-4 in the Lake Conference. The Section 6AAAA playoffs begin on March 2.
