Sports Roundup: Rough Stretch For Local Teams

Several squads from Minnetonka, Hopkins having difficult times claiming a victory.

It's been a rough stretch of days for several Minnetonka and Hopkins athletic teams as the Skippers and Royals boys and girls soccer, girls tennis and volleyball squads have come up on the short end of the final decision in recent contests.

Minnetonka Boys Soccer

The Minnetonka boys soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime at Edina, ranked sixth in Class AA, on Tuesday after a 6-0 loss to Class A's No. 1-rankee Benilde-St.Margaret's to fall to 2-6-2 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Hopkins Boys Soccer

The Hopkins boys soccer team lost 1-0 to Prior Lake on Saturday and 5-1 to Wayzata on Tuesday to fall to 2-6-2 on the season.

Heading into Tuesday, Juan Montero and Christian Abundis were tied for the Royals' scoring lead with one goal apiece.

Minnetonka Girls Soccer

A 1-0 loss at Edina on Tuesday followed a 2-1 defeat at Class AA's top-ranked team, Wayzata, on Saturday as the Minnetonka girls soccer team dropped to 5-2-2 this season.

The setbacks were the first of the year for the Skippers. Heading into Tuesday, Mary Stringini led Minnetonka with five goals as Ellie Crowell's seven assists also paced the team.

Hopkins Girls Soccer

The Hopkins girls soccer team fell to .500 following a 1-0 loss to Prior Lake last Saturday and 3-0 to Wayzata on Tuesday that gave the Royals a 3-3-4 mark this autumn.

Prior to Tuesday, Jillaine DeYoung and Emily Caouette led the team with three goals apiece.

Minnetonka Volleyball

The Minnetonka volleyball team dropped to 7-5 this season after a five-game match loss at Edina on Tuesday. 

Heading into that match, Renee Hoffman's 117 kills and 25 service aces led the team, as did Laura Herman's 173 digs and Rachel Hugo's 313 assists.

Hopkins Volleyball

Fifth-ranked Wayzata swept the Hopkins volleyball team (18-25, 18-25, 17-25) on Tuesday to drop the Royals to 5-6 this season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

The Hopkins girls tennis team went 0-3 in its last three matchups, losing by 4-3 scores to Orono and Chanhassen in a round-robin showcase on Saturday and 5-2 to Eden Prairie on Tuesday. Individual statistics were not made available.
