Tonka Boys Track And Field Wins Section 6AA Title, Girls Take Second

Both Skippers teams qualify for state Class AA meet.

The Minnetonka boys track and field team won the Section 6AA Track and Field meet at Hopkins High School on Friday, with the Skippers girls finishing second at the 12-team competition as both squads qualified several members for the state Class AA meet.

Minnetonka Boys: Skippers Win Sectional Title

The Minnetonka boys logged 153 points to win the sectional championship over second-place Eden Prairie as the Skippers qualified five individuals over six events, as well as two relay teams.

Rashad Cohen won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.08 seconds and took second in the in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.40.

Jamie Crum placed second in the 300 hurdles  in 39.62 and also qualified for state in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 5 inches.

Evan Larson took second in the discus with a heave of 161-7, as did James McFarlin in the 200-meter dash in 22.67 and Christopher Grover in the pole vault with a fling of 12-5.

The Minnetonka relay team of Keandre and DeAndre Singleton, Charles Webb and McFarlin took first in the 4x100-meter relay in 42.77 and fourth in the 4x200-meter relay in 1 minute, 30.10 seconds.

Minnetonka Girls: Skippers Second

The Minnetonka girls track and field team took second to host Hopkins as the Skippers recorded 103.75 points, while qualifying four individuals and one relay team for the state meet. 

Four Minnetonka individuals finished second in their respective events, including Elizabeth Endy (58.75) in the 400-meter dash, Anna Benke (17-2 3/4) in the long jump and Elizabeth Crist (114-70) in the discus.

Benke claimed the Skippers' lone section championship with a result of 10-1 in the pole vault.

Minnetonka's 4x400-meter relay team of Elise Byron, Anne Haakenstad, Maggie Carruth and Endy is also heading to state after a runner-up finish of 3:57.45.

The state meet is scheduled for June 10-11 at Hamline University in St. Paul.
