PHOTOS: Tonka Boys Track Takes Third at State Meet

A Wild-Card qualifier, Skippers rise to the challenge in Class AAA competition on Friday at Stillwater.

A Wild-Card competitor, the Minnetonka boys track and field team rose to snare a third-place finish at the Class AAA state True Team championship meet on a water-logged Friday evening at Stillwater High School.

The "True Team" concept assigns a point value to every competitor in each event, thereby rewarding a deeper team rather than a squad with a handful of elite athletes.

After claiming the Wild-Card by finishing as the top team not to win its sectional meet last week, the Skippers put their best foot forward on Friday to claim 748.5 points to take third by three points ahead of the host Ponies.

Rosemount won the Class AAA title with 851 points, with Eden Prairie taking second with 827.

Minnetonka individuals won four events at the meet, with Christian Skaret claiming titles in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, while Taylor Dawson won the discus with a hurl of 158 feet, 3 inches and Jamie Crum won the high jump with a leap of 6-4.
