Minnetonka Girls Tennis Head To State

Sports Roundup: Skippers top Mankato West, Eden Prairie in Section 2AA "Final Four" on Tuesday to claim title, berth in Class AA Tournament.

Minnetonka claimed a team berth in the Class AA State Girls Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, headlining a week full of postseason implications for the Skippers as well as their Hopkins neighbors.

Minnetonka Girls Tennis

The Minnetonka girls tennis team is on its way to State after the Skippers claimed back-to-back "Final Four" victories in the Section 2AA Tournament at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on Tuesday.

Minnetonka, seeded No. 1 in the North subsection, thumped No. 2 South seed Mankato West by a 6-1 score in its first match, then topped North No. 2 and Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie 5-2 to clinch the sectional title.

Selected Skippers team members will now compete to earn berths for themselves at State in the sectional individual tournament from Oct. 14-18. Seedings and pairings have not yet been announced.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

The third-seeded Hopkins girls tennis team shut out No. 6 seed Minneapolis Southwest on Tuesday to progress into the Section 6AA semifinal round.

Second-seeded Lake Conference rival Wayzata awaits Hopkins for a 9 a.m. semifinal match on Thursday at the Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville. The Trojans defeated the Royals 6-1 in September.

The 6AA championship match will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lakeville Lifetime.

Selected Hopkins team members will compete in the sectional individual tournament on Oct. 17-18. Ida Ramic and Ida Johnson will represent the team in singles play, with the duos of Natalie Ferris/Mia Rafowitz and Shelby Benkofske/Rachel Sadowsky competing in the doubles bracket.

Minnetonka vs. Hopkins Volleyball

Minnetonka defeated host Hopkins in four games (25-20, 27-25, 25-27, 28-26) to win a Lake Conference matchup on Tuesday

Individual statistics were not made available. The Skippers improved to 19-8 overall and 3-4 in the Lake with the win, while the Royals fell to 9-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Minnetonka Soccer

The Minnetonka girls and boys soccer teams head to different sections for their playoffs that begin on Thursday, with both playing at 7 p.m.

As a No. 2 seed in the Section 6AA Tournament, the Skippers girls will host No. 7 Robbinsdale Armstrong at the same time that the seventh-seeded Minnetonka boys play at No. 2 Edina to open the Section 2AA Tournament.

Hopkins Soccer

The Hopkins boys and girls soccer teams both open their respective Section 6AA Tournament appearances against Minneapolis Southwest on Thursday.

On the girls side, the Royals earned the No. 3 seed and will host the sixth-seeded Skippers at 7 p.m.; the tables were turned on the Hopkins boys, however, as Southwest claimed the third seed and welcomes the Skippers to Pershing Park in Minneapolis at 4 p.m.

Scores and results for the Hopkins/Breck girls swimming and diving meet scheduled for Tuesday were not reported.
