Minnetonka Girls Hoopsters Top New Prague

It wasn't easy, but it was a win.

The Minnetonka girls basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season by hanging on against New Prague in a 52-49 home win on Thursday night.

While the Skippers held a six point lead of 29-23 at halftime, the Trojans — ranked seventh in Class AAA — were not about to go down without a fight.

The visitors challenged Minnetonka until the final horn before eventually falling by three points to drop to 4-2 on the season.

Skippers forward Katy Winge led all scorers with 18 points on the night; the senior continues to be the leading offensive weapon for un-ranked Minnetonka with an average of 16.8 points-per-game.

Up next for the Skippers is a home game against former Lake Conference rival Robbinsdale Armstrong at home on Saturday afternoon, with tip-off scheduled for 2:45 p.m.

The Falcons, now a member of the Northwest Suburban Conference, are currently 2-3 on the season.

Friday Night Sports Scene

Minnetonka High School will be abuzz with the sounds of wrestling on Friday evening as the Skippers matmen welcome Buffalo, Shakopee and Eden Prairie to town for a quadrangular beginning at 5 p.m.

The Minnetonka swimming and diving squad hosts Grand Rapids in a dual meet slated for a 6 p.m. start in the aquatics center at East Middle School.

Minnetonka's alpine ski team takes on Chisago Lakes at Wild Mountain for a 3 p.m. start, with the Skippers boys basketball team headed to Champlin Park for a non-conference matchup set for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Results were not available for Minnetonka's gymnastics or dance teams, both of which competed in Lake Conference meets on Thursday night.
