Minnetonka Girls Hockey Opens Playoffs With Shutout Win

Skippers boys swimming and diving claim Lake Conference championship; Bailey qualifies for state Nordic meet.

The postseason began in earnest for several Minnetonka teams this past week and the Skippers enjoyed success over the weekend with wins on the rink and in the pool while sending a Nordic skier to state.

Girls Hockey: Minnetonka 5, Robbinsdale Armstrong 0

The top-seeded Minnetonka girls hockey team opened Section 6AA play in good form with a 5-0 shutout of Robbinsdale Armstrong on Saturday evening.

Paige Baldwin, Sidney Morin, Amy Peterson, Megan McGlynn and Sydney Baldwin all scored in the victory, with Julie Friend making 11 saves for the clean sheet.

Minnetonka takes on Buffalo in the second round of the 6AA bracket on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Nordic Ski: Skippers' Bailey Heading To State

Megan Bailey of the Minnetonka girls Nordic ski team qualified for this coming week's state meet with a sixth-place finish in the Section 6 championships on Friday at Baker Park.

The Skippers girls placed fifth as a team, the boys took sixth.

Swimming and Diving: Minnetonka 108, Edina 78

The Minnetonka boys swimming and diving team clinched the Lake Conference championship with a 108-78 victory over visiting Edina on Friday.

The Skippers won only four of 12 events, but claimed most of the second- and third-place finishes to propel themselves to the overall triumph.

Winning individually were Eric Sirjord in the 500-yard freestyle and Kendall Dunn in the 100-yard breaststroke; Minnetonka also won the 200-yard freestyle relay (Kurt Youngdahl, Dane Oberman, Austin Sarna, Zach Stettner) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Youngdahl, Sirjord, Stetter, Noah Busch).

Boys Hockey: Minnetonka 3, Eden Prairie 3

A 3-3 tie against Eden Prairie at the Pagel Ice Arena on Saturday sliced the Minnetonka boys hockey team's Lake lead to just one point over Edina as the Skippers closed the week with a 15-6-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in the conference.

The Skippers held one-goal leads in each of the first three periods on two scores by Erik Baskin and one by Connor Ryan, only to watch the Eagles battle back each time before a scoreless overtime session concluded the contest.

Minnetonka travels to Wayzata for a 7 p.m. start next Thursday; the Trojans rest in fourth in the Lake, but are just two points behind the Skippers.

Girls Basketball: Minnetonka 64, Braham 63

The Minnetonka girls basketball team barely survived a non-conference matchup against Class A power Braham, winning 64-63 to improve to 17-4 on the season.

Joanna Hedstrom led the Skippers with 21 points, while Katy Winge recorded 19 points.

Minnetonka, 2-2 in the Lake, travels to conference cellar-dweller Wayzata — winless in five circuit games — on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys Basketball: Anoka 67, Minnetonka 60

A 67-60 loss at non-conference opponent Anoka dropped the Minnetonka boys basketball team to 4-17 on the winter.

Nick Latzke and Tommy McDermott tied for the Skippers scoring lead with 14 points apiece in the loss.

Minnetonka returns to Lake play with a home game against Wayzata on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Results were not available for a Saturday meet involving the Minnetonka wrestling team.
