Hopkins Wins, Minnetonka Loses at Tip Off Classic

Minnetonka High School hosted the Boys' Tip Off Classic on Saturday, featuring 15 boys' games.

Minnetonka High School played host Saturday to the 10th Annual Breakdown Sports USA Boys’ Tip Off Classic. The event featured 15 boys’ basketball games. Twenty-three of the 30 teams are ranked in Breakdown Sports’ top 15 preseason rankings, including the No. 1 team in two of the four classes.

Hopkins held off Lakeville North in a 89-84 nail-biter, while Cretin-Derham Hall blew past host Minnetonka, 112-82.

Saturday's game started out close, with the Royals closing out the half up 46-42. In the second, Hopkins pulled ahead 60-49 at one point, but Lakeville North rallied to shrink the gap to 64-63.

The rest of the half saw back-and-forth action, but Hopkins came on strong in the final minutes to secure a five-point victory.

Senior forward Stephon Sharp led the game with 25 points. Sophomore forward Amir Coffey sank 20 points. Senior guard Jake Wright scored 15 points. Junior guard John Warren got 11.

This was possibly the highest scoring game in Breakdown Tip Off Classic history with Minnetonka losing to Cretin-Derham Hall 112-82, according to Breakdown USA.

Three Raiders scored more than 20 points. Cretin-Derham Hall was 7-of-14 from three-point range and 39-of-61 from the field overall.

Sam Neumann, the highest scorer for the Raiders, scored eight straight points to break out to a 28-14 lead. Cretin-Derham Hall scored 60 more points after intermission. 

Delshon Strickland led Minnetonka with 27 points, and Careino Gurley had 15 points.
