Two Minnetonka Students Win Achievement Scholarships

Mitchell A. Harris and Tyler K. Harris both received $2,500 scholarships through the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Two Minnetonka High School students have received Achievement Scholarship through the National Achievement Scholarship Program, The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday.

Mitchell A. Harris and Tyler K. Harris both received $2,500 scholarships.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately funded competition established in 1964 “to honor scholastically talented Black American youth.” Mitchell Harris and Tyler Harris were among 800 scholarship recipients, including 700 who received $2,500 awards.

Both students plan to make a career in finance.

They were selected from a pool of more than 160,000 students who entered the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship when they took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors.

This year’s National Achievement Awards totaled more $2 million. They were funded by grants from 34 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
