Relay for Life Connects Stories and Survivors

The fundraiser this past Friday was as much about celebration as remembrance.

As Relay for Life participants shared their connections with cancer, it was apparent the disease affects the lives of practically everyone.

The Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club walked in the American Cancer Society-sponsored event for their friend and teammate Leslie Engel, who died of cancer in 2008. Their cheery, tie-dyed team shirts sent a bold message to  “Live Fiercely.”

“It’s a good bonding experience, and we really get to relate to our past,” said team member Sarah Hodapp.

Members of the skating club watched as Engel battled cancer before passing away a year after she was diagnosed.  “She was really a fighter,” Hodapp said.

When club's team name was announced during the opening ceremony this past Friday, the girls jumped to their feet and cheered. After the introductions, all 225 mostly high-school aged participants sat in the Minnetonka High School gym somber-faced, listening to messages about the importance of cancer awareness and research.

Participants took a team lap around Minnetonka High School, but the threat of rain otherwise confined them to the gym. Inside, there were stations for henna tattoos, crazy hair, jousting and a variety of team events.

“When I was in fourth grade, my aunt passed away from breast cancer, so ever since then, my whole family has been really involved,” said Betsy Dorn, team captain of the team Senior Women. “Now I have my own team with my friends.”

Relay for Life Minnetonka raised over $14,000 for cancer research.
