Minnetonka Students Earn Top National Honors

The Minnetonka DECA chapter was recognized for being the largest chapter in the state of Minnesota.

Seniors Rachel Moore, Taylor Penzel, and Junior Meghan Heldt earned Honorable Mention honors at the 2011 DECA International Career Development Conference, which took place in Orlando, earlier this month. Other DECA students who qualified for ICDC and participated were Alex Purnell and Hannah Worrell.

DECA is an association of students who aim to be emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.  Specifically, DECA prepares the next generation to be academically prepared, community oriented and professionally responsible. 

In addition to competitions, the MHS DECA chapter spends time doing community service, attending a leadership conference and participating in other events like Timberwolves Business Day. The MHS DECA chapter advisors are teachers Erik Sill and Connie Strand.

Minnesota DECA has over 2,000 members in over 50 chapters. This is the third year MHS has had a DECA chapter and the Minnetonka DECA chapter was also recognized at the conference for being the largest chapter in the state of Minnesota.

2011 DECA International Career Development Conference MHS Winners

  • Meghan Heldt was a Top 25 Finalist in the Principles of Hospitality content interview and earned Honorable Mention honors for her Top 10 score for her role play.
  • Rachel Moore was a Top 40 Finalist for the Principles of Business and Administration content interview.
  • Taylor Penzel earned Honorable Mention for finishing Top 10 on the Marketing Exam.
