Minnetonka School Board Picks New Member

With the school board's decision, the July 19 special meeting scheduled for this process has been cancelled.

The Minnetonka School Board unanimously approved the appointment of John Holcomb to the Minnetonka School Board, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of of this year.

With the board’s early decision on July 12, the special meeting scheduled for this process on July 19 has been cancelled.

Holcomb is a resident of Chanhassen and is currently a member of the District’s Citizens Finance Advisory and Audit Committee (CFAC). He has two elementary-aged children in Minnetonka Public Schools and has volunteered on multiple projects at school.

Holcomb has worked for Target Corporation since 1997, currently serving as the vice president of healthcare operations. He has also served as healthcare group manager, buyer/strategist for bikes and fitness and senior director for healthcare. 

Holcomb holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Toledo (OH) and currently serves on the University of Toledo Dean’s Commission on Pharmaceutical Education.

During the selection process, board members relied on the , placing emphasis on the applicant’s ability to demonstrated leadership in the district and ability to quickly understand the role of the School Board member as an advocate for public education and a steward of public resources. 

“I see him as someone who really understands governance and who understands what our role as a board is," said Board Clerk Pam Langseth. "I see him as very strategic. His communication skills with the community and the staff and with all of us will be very helpful. His participation in CFAC and his clear understanding of the fiscal situation of the District is really a big piece right now.”

In his application materials, Holcomb stated, “I have seen firsthand what is possible by investing in students, educators and public schools, and providing opportunities for individuals to succeed. I also realize that being a board member carries with it significant responsibilities not only to our students/educators, but also our communities with which the District operates, and I welcome that responsibility.”

Holcomb was selected from a who applied for the position. 

The board conducted interviews with the candidates on July 10. At their meeting on July 12, the Board narrowed to two finalists: Heidi Garcia and John Holcomb. The board then made a motion for the final appointment after discussion.

Holcomb will begin his work and take the Oath of Office at the Aug. 2 meeting. His seat will be up for election in November 2013.  

“Our community has been blessed with five outstanding individuals who were willing to step forward and offer themselves to work on behalf of our students and our community," said Board Chair Karen Walkowski. 

Walkowski encouraged each one of the applicants to continue in their commitment to the district and seriously consider running in 2013.
