Minnetonka High School ExCEL Award Nominees Announced

Juniors Kaylee Martin and Riley Nelson have been named the Minnetonka High School Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (ExCEL) Award nominees for 2013.

The following is information from Minnetonka Schools:

The Minnetonka High School Activities Office has announced Kaylee Martin and Riley Nelson will represent Minnetonka in the 2013 Minnesota State High School League ExCEL Awards program.

Kaylee and Martin were chosen from several qualified applicants for the honor that recognizes high school juniors who are active in school activities or athletics, show leadership qualities and who volunteer in their communities.

“Our students’ high levels of achievement in academics, athletics and community service activities are impressive. We have some truly outstanding students and Kaylee and Riley are great representatives of Minnetonka High School,” said MHS Activities Director Ted Schultz.

“Kaylee Martin is a diligent student; an intelligent and hard-working young woman,” remarked Language Arts teacher Mary Hedstrom. In addition to her strong academics, Kaylee is a multi-sport athlete who has earned Letters as a member of the MHS cross country, nordic skiing and track teams.

As a freshman, she was named Rookie of the Year. Kaylee has also played in Minnetonka’s band and has sang in her church choir. Her passion for community service started with a mission trip to Colorado where she helped build homes, feed the hungry and visited a homeless shelter. Kaylee received the President’s Volunteer Service Bronze Award for serving 103 hours this past year helping the hungry, poor and elderly in Minneapolis.

Riley Nelson is an honor-roll student, a multi-year academic letter winner, an Advanced Placement Scholar and an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate. He is a member of the Minnetonka Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Riley is a multi-sport athlete who has earned Letters as a member of the MHS cross country, nordic skiing and track teams. He was voted captain by his cross country teammates and was a member of the MHS 2012 Conference, Section and State Champion Track True Team, running in the 4x800 relay. Riley is also a gifted artist. He has won numerous Scholastic Art Awards and was a Congressional Art Competition winner, having his art displayed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Riley is a multi-year recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. He uses his artistic talent to raise money for several charities by drawing caricatures and has volunteered at the Chanhassen Public Library and with Tour de Tonka. The ExCEL Awards are part of an annual recognition program sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.

All member schools are encouraged to nominate one boy and one girl to be considered for the awards, which are chosen by an independent panel of judges from across the state. This is the 17th year that the MSHSL has sponsored the ExCEL Award. The 2013 ExCEL Award winners will be announced on the MSHSL website on February 1, 2013. Winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the broadcast of the 2013 winter tournaments.
