MHS Sends 10 Marketing Masters to Salt Lake City

Ten students from Minnetonka High School's DECA chapter earned the opportunity to compete at the 2012 International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City later this spring.

Ten students involved with will compete at the International Career Development Conference April 29 trough May 2 in Salt Lake City.  

The DECA team from Minnetonka High School set several chapter records at the state competition March 4-6. These records include:

  • Total number of students qualifying for the State Competition–99 students

  • Total number of students qualifying for finals at the State Competition–37 students

  • Total number of students qualifying for the International Competition-10

At the state competition, MHS students competed individually or in small teams, in 30 different events. Each event included some version of a business role play or prepared written business plan – ranging in topics from sports marketing to restaurant management. Each student completed a 100-question marketing test. A combination of scores from the role play and the marketing test determined the winners. 

In order to qualify for the competition, students had to finish in the top four of their specific competition. The ten qualifiers are listed below along with their event and place at the state competition:

The purpose of DECA is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. In addition to competitions, the MHS DECA team spends time doing community service, attending leadership conferences and organizing other events such as the May Madness Teacher Basketball Tournament, which benefits local charities. and Connie Strand are the staff advisors of the team.
