Goodbye Study Hall: Hopkins Junior Highs to Start Rigorous New Schedule

The new schedule, which accommodates International Baccalaureate requirements, will eliminate study halls from seventh- and eighth-grade schedules.

Hopkins junior high students will have a new type of schedule when they start the 2014-15 school year.

The School Board voted Thursday to change from an alternating-term block to an alternating-day, four-block schedule. Study halls will be cut from both seventh- and eighth-grade schedules, according to the district.

The change accommodates the requirements of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, which both junior highs start next year.

IB requires that students take eight required courses throughout the year—including social studies, language and literature, mathematics, science, world language, physical education and health, design, and arts. Some of the courses must be concurrent.

“The schedule change will provide a consistent, well-rounded, rigorous academic experience for all students,” a news release quoted North Junior High Principal Becky Melville.
