Veterans, Don’t Lose Out on This Valuable Tax Credit

The Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone will expire Oct. 15 for those who served in 2009.

More than 2,300 soldiers have yet to claim a tax credit worth hundreds of dollars that they earned while serving overseas.

The Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone will expire Oct. 15 for those who served in 2009. The credit is for those who served in a combat zone or a qualified hazardous duty area in 2009. The credit is worth $120 for each month served.

To receive the credit, soldiers must fill Form M99, Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone and attach the corresponding Form DD-214. Those who are still on duty can attach Leave and Earnings statements for each month of qualifying service. Applications must be postmarked or in the agency’s hands by Oct. 15.

Soldiers must have been a Minnesota resident during the time of service.
