How to Register to Vote in Minnetonka

This year's election is exactly six weeks away. If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now.

Today is National Voter Registration Day, and thousands of local, state and national organizations have mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their vote in this year’s elections.

Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline.

The voter registration deadline for Minnesota is Oct. 16. Not sure if you’re registered? Check the Secretary of State’s voter information portal.

Here’s information on how you can register in time for the Nov. 6 elections:

Voter Registration

If you have recently moved, changed your name, or have not voted in the last four years, you may want to pre-register to save yourself time on Election Day.

• By mail: Registration forms are available at most government offices and public libraries. Forms must be received by October 16th in order for the pre-registration to be effective for the November election. Forms are also available online. Mail the form to the Hennepin County Voter Registration Office at A-600 Government Center, 300 South 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55487-0060.
• In person: Stop by City Hall or the Hennepin County Election Office (Govt. Center, PSL Level, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis).

Registration forms are available in English, Hmong, Spanish, Somali, Russian and Vietnamese.

Same-Day Registration

Voters may also register on Election Day. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, same-day registration requires one of the following:

• A valid Minnesota driver’s license, learner’s permit, Minnesota ID card, or receipt for any of these
• A valid student ID card including your photo, if your college has provided a student housing list to election officials
• A Tribal ID card that contains your picture and signature 
• A valid registration in the same precinct under a different name or address 
• A notice of late registration sent to you by your county auditor or city clerk
• A voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath
• An employee of the residential facility where you live who can confirm your address with a signed oath
• Both 1) a photo ID from the list below, and 2) a current bill from the list below with your current name and address in the precinct
