Bonoff: GOP Restrictions on Stem Cell Research "Sweeping"

Republicans in St. Paul are targeting embryonic stem cell research. Minnetonka's Senator Bonoff says the measure is "of great concern."

Earlier this week, the Senate Higher Education Committee adopted, along strict party lines, an amendment offered by President of the Senate, that would cut off funding for embryonic stem cell research in Minnesota. Specifically this measure would prohibit state or federal money from financing somatic cell nuclear transfer. The amendment was added to Minnesota's higher education funding bill.

In response, said this anti-cloning language that Republicans have introduced into the education omnibus bill would prevent life-saving stem cell research at the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

says the "sweeping" scope of the restriction would prevent those institutions from taking any public funds for this type of research, including state and federal funds.
