MN State Troopers Visit Minnetonka Football Game
The troopers will launch T-shirts to students that will remind teenagers to wear their seat belts.
Minnesota State Troopers visited Minnetonka High School's football game against Shakopee on Thursday with an important message to teenagers: buckle up.
The visit was a part of a new program to encourage teenagers to wear their seatbelt, said the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in a release. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in Minnesota and are due to inexperience, distractions, risk-taking and low seatbelt compliance.
State Troopers will visit football games throughout the season and launch T-shirts to students during the games. Emblazoned on neon green shirts are the words "Everyday I'm Bucklin."
Reminders to buckle up will also sound on the public address system at the stadium and during morning school announcements.
Parents have a role in encouraging safe driving behaviors as well, the Minnesota DPS explained. They should remind their teenagers to buckle up in both the front and back seats. Parents can also help by enforcing nighttime driving and passenger limitations.
Teenagers should know that drivers under 18 are not allowed to use their cell phone and texting while driving is illegal even when the vehicle is stopped in traffic.
