Minnetonka Police Seek Applications for Citizens Academy

Participant gain insight into the Minnetonka Police Department through lectures and hand-on activities.

The Minnetonka Police Department is accepting applications for the 2013 Citizens’ Academy.

Minnetonka residents who would like to learn more about the Minnetonka Police Department are invited to apply to attend the eight-week program set for Tuesdays, April 2-May 21, from 6-9 p.m.

The academy’s goal is to build relationships with the community, help residents understand law enforcement strategies and challenges, enhance public safety and reduce crime.

Academy participants will learn about Minnetonka Police Department operations through classroom lectures and hands-on experiences. Topics include police recruiting and training, crime scene investigations, SWAT, community service officers, computer forensics, drug task force, school resource officers, police K9s, crime lab, crime prevention, crime analysis, traffic unit, use of force and dispatch.

Participant qualifications include:

·         Willingness to commit to attending the eight sessions.

·         21 years of age

·         Reside or work in Minnetonka. Preference will be given to Minnetonka residents. If there are unfilled academy seats, these will be offered to non-Minnetonka applicants.

·         Must agree to a basic criminal background check
