Minnetonka Man Charged With Felony DWI, Illegally Possessing Handgun

Dallas James Doggett is accused of drunken driving and possessing a handgun when stopped by police.

A Minnetonka man has been charged with two felonies after a traffic stop in Minnetonka on Feb. 15.

Dallas James Doggett, 32, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. Doggett is also charged with felony first-degree driving while intoxicated, which has a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to an address in Minnetonka on Feb. 15 on a report of an intoxicated man who was driving a black Chevrolet Tahoe.

Police spotted Doggett’s vehicle and watched him commit “numerous traffic infractions” before stopping his SUV, according to the complaint.

Officers noted in the report that Doggett had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, and also noticed an empty handgun holster on the floor by Doggett’s feet. A subsequent search of the SUV turned up a handgun.

Doggett told police that he had drunk several beers and “some shots” before driving, and his blood-alcohol content was measured at .18 in a preliminary breath test, according to police.

Doggett was convicted of criminal vehicular manslaughter in Texas in 2002 and, as a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Doggett is free on a $15,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled March 15 in Hennepin County District Court.
