Man Tries To Steal At Best Buy Using Tin Foil

Curtis McElderry was charged on Christmas Eve with one count of possession of shoplifting gear and one count of theft.

While many people were out buying their last minute Christmas gifts, police believe a St. Paul man was trying to get his free from Best Buy with the help of tin foil.

Curtis Alan McElderry, 54, was charged on Christmas Eve with one count of possession of shoplifting gear, a felony, and one count of theft, a misdemeanor.

On Dec. 23, officers responded to a reported theft at a Best Buy in Minnetonka. Store security told officers they were watching a man who was suspected of theft in the past.

Store security watched McElderry as he allegedly wrapped a Samsung Galaxy Tab worth $249.99 in aluminum foil and left the store without paying it. Wrapping aluminum foil around tagged merchandise defeats the store’s security system.

Officers located and detained the McElderry as he attempted to leave the area in his vehicle. Officers say they found the Galaxy Tab along with a roll of aluminum foil inside his car. A wad of aluminum foil was also found in his clothing.
