4 Charged with Stealing Men's Clothing from Ridgedale Macy's

Four men have been charged stealing almost $1,800 worth of men’s clothing from Macy’s at Ridgedale Center in Minnetonka.

Harvey Jay Williams, 20; Marcel Terrel McMath, 19; and Terrell Glasper, also known as Derrell Glasper, 20, all of Minneapolis, and Joseph Keith Smith, 21, of Brooklyn Center are charged with aiding and abetting theft over $1,000, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Williams, whom police say drove the getaway car, is also charged with fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, a felony with a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Minnetonka police were called to Ridgedale Mall just before 9 p.m. on Nov. 13 on a report of a “grab-and-run” theft at Macy’s, according to the criminal complaints.

Macy’s employees told dispatchers that three men were in the store, selecting clothing without regard for price or size.

Police stationed themselves outside the mall, near the Macy’s exit doors closest to the men’s clothing department. Just after 9 p.m., three men ran out of the doors carrying clothing still on hangers and with sensor tags attached, according to the complaints.

The men ran toward a red Pontiac Grand Prix idling in the lot with its headlights on, and jumped inside.

Police began to pursue the car through the parking lot, and turned on their emergency lights as the car reached a road on the mall’s perimeter. The car continued onto city streets, and other officers joined the pursuit.

The Grand Prix traveled almost a mile before pulling over and stopping, according to the complaint.

The driver was identified as Williams, and the three men in the car were identified as McMath, Smith and Glasper. Police searched the car and found a large number of new Polo, Levi, Lacoste and Hilfiger jeans, still with hangers and security devices attached to them.

Williams later admitted to police that he saw the squad cars pursuing him with their lights activated, but failed to stop, according to the complaints.

Smith and McMath admitted taking clothing from Macy’s and fleeing the store without paying for it, the complaints say. Both men said they told Williams to pull over when they saw police pursuing them.

Surveillance video from Macy’s showed McMath, Glasper and Smith fleeing the store with armloads of clothing. A total of 19 items of clothing valued at $1,743 were recovered from the Grand Prix, according to the complaints.

Williams, McMath, Glasper and Smith have been released from custody on separate $10,000 bonds. All four have separate omnibus hearings scheduled Dec. 21 in Hennepin County District Court.
