White Hawks Wrestlers Pick Up Two Wins Before Break

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad picked up its first two wins of the season at Delano High School on Thursday, December 19, evening their conference and overall record at 2-2.  In the first dual, the White Hawks defeated host Delano 62-16.  “Delano is young and had some holes, but we wrestled well and got some big wins,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.  Senior Adrian Wear and junior Cole Anderly delivered two of those wins, as both were locked in close matches in the third period, but eventually earned pins.

In the second dual of the evening, the White Hawks downed Orono 39-19.  “Like Delano, Orono has some tough individuals but were not able to fill a line up,” commented assistant coach Eric Rodelius.  The JV squad was also able to get in on the winning, as 7th graders Bradford O’Connell, Ian Caufield, Colton Smith and Brock Munsterteiger all earned pins, while 8th graders Jake Anderly and Bobby Sweet both notched wins.  Freshman Bobby Kohman and sophomore Alex Wells also got their hand raised.  The young guys also helped out the varsity squad, as 7th grader Ben Schmalz earned his first varsity win, and freshman Dylan Smerillo earned a varsity win via a forfeit.  “It was fun having the freshmen squad (7th -9th graders) being part of the action and contributing to the cause,” added freshman coach John Wardlow.

The White Hawks will be off until January 3, when they travel north to the Hibbing Duals.  “We will be facing some tough teams up there and we will really find out where we are at team-wise.  So far we’ve wrestled mostly individual tournaments, so it will be fun to wrestle and bond as a team,” said Munsterteiger.   The White Hawks will face Virginia in first-round action at 4:00 p.m., and will continue action on Saturday, January 4 at 10:00 a.m.
