Letter: Attack Ad on Kirk Stensrud is False

"I hoped that we could make it thru the election year without false smears against local candidates."

To the Editor:

I’m writing in regards to an attack ad on Representative Kirk Stensrud. The ad repeats a lie this special interest group has used across Minnesota with claims that media outlets have investigated and found to be false.

The fact is, as reported by WCCO television on September 17, 2012, that 32 percent of Minnesota homeowners saw reduced property taxes last year. Homeowners are expected to see another decrease this year according to a report by the nonpartisan House Fiscal Department.

I hoped that we could make it thru the election year without false smears against local candidates. These ads against Kirk with “facts” so untrue that even WCCO had to call them out for lying mean my hopes are dashed.

I would urge anyone who wants to know where Kirk Stensrud stands to visit his website, www.kirk4rep.com. Next time you see one of these ads that lies about his record, do yourself a favor and change the channel.

I am glad to see some people standing up against the dirty tricks of the liberals. I guess the liberals think they have discovered that they can say anything and get away with it, because the clueless will only remember the false accusation. It is a sad day for America if this becomes the new reality. That is, that nothing matters anymore, and those who can make up the most outrageous lies prevail. I think there are parts of the world where this is true. According to the principles of radicals and progressives, and according to Saul Alinksy, the "truth" is not what is true, but what advances their cause. You can expect such a standard whenever you hear anything from the left. But I think they will not prevail, and that truth and principals of good government will prevail. And those such as Rep. Kirk Stensrud, who still have a moral compass will rise to the occasion of leadership, to serve all of the people.

The Stensrud campaign is now experiencing invasive tactics by unwelcome DFL activists who interrupt events and are running false attack ads and LTE, in one case with the help of EP News editor! Wise up folks. Chicago-style politics is alive and well under SD48 DFL control.

Pardon me if I, a liberal, interject the fact that I have received no less than 6 "attack ads" on behalf of Stensrud. Sent by outside groups with big money and elusive names, they paint Yvonne Selcer as "tax and spend liberal" based on 8 years of service on the Hopkins School Board! On the contrary, during her first years on the board, they discovered accounting errors, at the ADMINISTRATIVE level, that had pushed the district into statutory operating debt. Yvonne was instrumental in tackling the issue head on, making difficult choices and cuts where necessary, and was part of the SOLUTION, not the problem. These two letters are deflecting the issue of attack ads and using conservative buzz words like "moral compass" and "Chicago-style politics" and even quoting Saul Alinsky as if he leads the DFL party. The best decision in the voting booth is guided by non-partisan information designed to inform voters, not deceive them. At one such source, I found that Stensrud had voted to repeal business property taxes! Is this not a conflict of interest for a "small business owner"? And how are we to make up for the void in revenue such a move would result in- can you say "higher property taxes for the homeowner"? And just because 32% of Minnesotans saw a property tax decline, does that mean we constituents of Stensrud fall into that category? Instead of name calling and finger pointing, do your own research, and vote for the candidate who most represents YOUR values.

I did the research. Stensrud represents my values, no doubt. He is a fiscal hawk, exactly what he said he would be and do. And, the DFL attack pieces say 95% saw property tax increases, but here, one liberal gets it right that 32% saw a decline. Most reading this will be able to do the math and note the DFL has the math wrong. Kirk has not solved the state's fiscal issues by raising taxes. And, he voted to pay back the state borrowing he previously approved. But, that was vetoed. He was handed a tough set of problems for his first term, and unlike some candidates, he didn't sit around blaming others, he simply rolled up he sleeves and got to work. The Hopkins "Miracle" involved over $100 million more in debt. Higher property taxes. Declining enrollment. And, 400 Edina households want out of the district while Minnetonka gains open enrollment. The narrative for the DFL challenger is overstated. That's the problem. She borrowed and raised property taxes. Enrollment has declined. This is not a fix. But, that is her campaign. She got to create that narrative. The DFL challenger is also not a small business owner. She never started a business. Yet, again, Kirk Stensrud is a small business owner. He knows that business regulation is over the top. He has endorsements from the major business groups such as NFIB. By the way, the corporate property tax is beyond what most states have. We need to be competitive. Vote Stensrud.

The (now 11) PAC attacks on Y Slecer...these are OK with your "conservative values?" Forget to comment on them?
Political Mama October 29, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Certainly not, but I can only speak for myself. Questioning a candidates experience is NOT an attack. They are sincere questions that taxpayers DESERVE answers too. In fact, from sources from people who have known Selcer for 25 years, no one has seen her go to work. The state of Minnesota shows a provisional teaching license issued to her, but no renewal. How does someone who, apparently, did not accrue the 125 hours required to renew a teaching license TEACH? Especially as special end classroom teacher. All I have ever asked for where the actual names of corporations that she worked for and where she taught. Not an attack. Simple line of questioning.

PAC's operate with complete autonomy from campaigns. From either side of this race. It is reported the Stensrud/Selcer race will be one of the most expensive in MN. Why? Because the DFL is pouring, DUMPING money into the area with negative ads- two to one (if you do not refute the lies, the lies stand true). They are hiring folks to walk on behalf of Selcer (although to be fair that is SOP for the MN DFL) because Selcer finds it too "pedestrian". The Stensrud team is doing more with less and that is because voters, taxpayers BELIEVE he is the best candidate for SD48A. Vote Stensrud for sanity in YOUR state gov.

I'm for free speech. Anyone is free to discuss issues. I am for government getting its fiscal house in order. Government through the ability to tax is taking over the economy and misallocating our resources. So, when someone says no to $5 billion more in spending every two years AND adds funding to K-12 at the State level, I impressed. That's what I want to see. Vote Kirk Stensrud.

Dave and Political Mama- first of all, if you have ANY questions regarding Yvonne Selcer's work record, go to her website, facebook page, or twitter. She has contact information, including her phone number. It took me half an hour to even FIND Stensrud's campaign page, and all that was there was FLUFF! Photos, endorsements by business groups, and updates on local HS sports!! Give me a break- no policy issues, no record given, nothing! Those of you who think business is the be all and end all of what is important are seeing things slightly skewed. Businesses could not exist without the infrastructure that government provides, its protection from fire and harm, and an educated population from which to draw their employees AND to whom they must sell their product or service. Stensrud and the republicans "balanced" the budget by shifting money around, taking from the schools, and also from the tobacco fund. No wonder teenage smoking is on the rise again. Funds intended to educate them have instead been spent in the general fund. And while you may argue that the debt of Hopkins School District was increased, don't forget that part of that was a taxpayer-approved referendum. And "Mama", if the negative ads are "2 to 1", I must not be on the DFL mailing list, since I haven't seen more than 1. The TV ads are very generic in nature, in case you haven't noticed, and Stensrud has little to show for his two years in St. Paul. It's time for a change, for someone with bipartisan support!

Yvonne Selcer used to be a teacher before she met her husband Charles. However, she stopped working when she had children, staying home to raise them until she joined the school board 8 years ago. Surely you don't mean to suggest that raising a family is not work? Surely you don't mean to suggest that working for eight years to improve our schools is not work?
Kathleen Nelson November 03, 2012 at 06:27 PM
If Stensrud is "doing more with less" it's because Karl Rove and his "friends" are pouring $$$ into the race on his behalf. His website is certainly "less"! Are you shocked that a "small businessman" is endorsed by nebulous groups supposedly representing small business? Are you aware that he favored a bill that ELIMINATED property taxes for business? As a VOLUNTEER for Yvonne Selcer, who actually door knocked WITH her, I have seen no evidence of PAID canvassers. She has more bipartisan support than almost any candidate statewide, and that is because she is reasonable, will listen, will research, and will ACT WITH HER CONSTITUENTS at heart. Kirk Stensrud is nothing more than a puppet for the Republicans and will do their bidding as directed. I am also a teacher, and I assure you I have seen no evidence of his support for K-12 schools. The current legislative budget is nothing more than a shell game, shifting money from one pot to another and issuing bonds to pay off the interest on more bonds. Stensrud is an empty suit, who could not even hold his own at a public forum without David Hann sitting to his left so he could parrot what Hann had said. I am open minded, and have voted for Republicans in the past, but this current batch of legislators are ideologues who put divisive amendments on the ballot to bring out the right wing voters when they would probably not vote if they didn't have the chance to wage war on gays, minorities and the old & poor who do not have photo ID.

Selects website offers no answers to her actual work experience, outside the home, she mentions. Where did all thus business experience take place if she was at no e taking care of her family, which is indeed valuable and important, work? I can SAY anything. But without anything to substantiate my claims they are worthless. Her work on the school board speaks for itself. Borrow, spend and tax.
Thinking person in Mtka November 28, 2012 at 10:29 PM
In the end, the citizens dumped Stensrud by double the margin he eeked out over Maria Ruud 2 years ago. That's a veritable mandate!! And Hann LOST every precinct in Minnetonka except for two. That speaks volumes about the cultural divide between Minnetonka and Eden Prairie - despite being geographically adjacent. I would love for Minnetonka to be totally separate from Eden Prairie.
