Mary, a member of the Minnetonka Rotary attended the Graduation Ceremony at the County Home School for the Epsilon School program. The Graduating class was 18 young people: eight received High School Diplomas and 10 received GEDs. The speaker was a former graduate who had achieved his own success. He did not focus on what that was, but instead stressed that the determination required in gaining a High School Diploma or GED would be needed for them to find a “better path” in order to avoid the comfort of the same old behavior and friends that led them to into trouble and to spend their final year in high school at the County Home School.

I represented The Rotary Foundation of the Minnetonka Rotary. My granddaughter, Madeleine, attended with me. It has been a financial struggle for her to attend Boston University, but it was expected that she would go. For the Graduates of the County Home School Epsilon Program it is not a foregone conclusion of advanced schooling. It was good for both of us to see the proud and determined faces of the Graduates, and to hear the constantly said: “We have your back. We are here for you.” from both the Principal of the Epsilon Program and the Superintendent of the County Home School.

I was proud to be among those that provided several of the Graduating Seniors from the Epsilon Program with a scholarship, which can be used for any type of educational pursuit beyond high school. The Scholarship is a joint effort between us, The Minnetonka Rotary Foundation and the Reiss Foundation, and fulfills the goal of the Minnetonka Rotary to use our Foundation funds to “Build Responsible Youth” and celebrates Bob Reiss’s longstanding efforts of helping the residents of the Home School.
