Technology and Math

iPads, tablets, mobile devices….today’s technology is not only engraining itself into our lives, but is extremely portable.  Touch screen technology is revolutionizing the way students engage with concepts previously much more abstract.  It’s hard to find a teen, and perhaps even a “tween”, without some sort of device in their backpack.  (That is, if you don’t see it in their hands first!)

Years ago, technology existed primarily to be used for drill and practice sorts of activities, i.e. timed practice of basic facts.  And, while this was an improvement, and more enticing, way of reviewing a stack of flashcards, developers, designers and educators have advanced the rigor, usability and hierarchy of thinking in what math technology can bring to the table for our kids.

Now, not only can students get immediate feedback on these basic skill sets, but also enter the realm of real-time collaboration beyond an instructional setting.  My Math Teacher is a tremendous advocate of technology, and realizes that we could be significantly limited without it.  But, we also fully subscribe to the philosophy that without a skilled teacher guiding the websites, apps and programs which are placed in front of our students to help them navigate their course, some critical moments of optimum learning may be missed.  It is often a very slight nuance of recognizing where a process in thinking may be errant, and capturing that moment as a teachable moment, which will have much more of an impact on student learning.

Both teachers AND students are significantly empowered when technology is used beyond a replacement for traditional paper/pencil activities, and instead,  as a vehicle to promote higher level understanding and thinking….skills that are critical in adulthood.  With a skilled and knowledgeable teacher charting the course, and “prescribing” a precise learning plan, amazing learning can take place!
